The Hidden Costs of School Construction
Building Schools Isn't Just About the Building
“Why does it cost so much to build a school?”

That’s a question we hear a lot. And as builders close in on a record year constructing new homes, we understand that taxpayers may be looking at the cost of bond projects with a critical eye. It’s easy to consider the cost of building a new home — the average new home price in Northwest ISD was $352,147 in 2020 — and wonder why a new school could cost $42 million.

That comparison just doesn’t add up, according to Tim McClure, assistant superintendent for facilities.

“There are so many layers involved in planning and constructing schools,” he said. “These buildings will serve our community for decades to come. That’s not something we take lightly.”
Find Community Meetings, Project Details, Campus Proposals & More on Bond Website
The Northwest ISD bond website has been updated to include a calendar of events, which lists Zoom meetings to learn more about the May 2021 bond proposal. Meetings are scheduled for a number of neighborhoods; school principals are leading bond meetings by feeder patterns; and Dr. Warren has another Facebook Live scheduled for April 14.

The site also includes detailed project descriptions, campus fact sheets for elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools; explanations of projects to address school standardization and equity, and much more.

Residents are encouraged to join a Zoom informational meeting that fits their schedule and to review the bond website prior to voting. Polls open for Early Voting on April 19, and Election Day is Saturday, May 1.

Chisholm Trail Middle School Student Named CISNT Student of the Year
Congratulations to Brandon Daugherty, a seventh grader at Chisholm Trail Middle School, for being recognized as the Communities in Schools North Texas (CISNT) 2020-2021 Student of the Year. In the past 365 days, Brandon has overcome several difficult challenges most won't go through in an entire lifetime. However, Brandon hasn't let those circumstances keep him from shining.

Over the past year, Brandon has improved his class grade averages, joined several extracurricular activities and has actively involved himself in helping other peers deal with their own personal life struggles.

Northwest ISD is proud to be represented by Brandon, his family support system, and the educators and staff at CISNT and Chisholm Trail Middle School. Well deserved, Brandon!

NHS PTSA Provides STEM @ Home Kits
The Northwest High School PTSA is providing a STEM@Home program for Northwest High School families with remote learners in grades 4 through 7. STEM packets were mailed to students this week. Students will participate in hands-on science activities from the comfort of their homes. The program is designed to make science more accessible and less intimidating to students and their families and to inspire interest and support student success in STEM.

Students will have an opportunity to upload their experiments to a designated student only Flipgrid, sharing what they learned and how they were challenged. The event is part of National PTA’s STEM + Families Science Festivals program and the association’s new PTA Programs at Home models.
Free Developmental Screenings for NISD Infants, Toddlers & Preschoolers
Families living within Northwest ISD boundaries may request developmental screenings at no charge for infants, toddlers and preschoolers living in their household through the NISD Parents as Teachers program.

Caregivers meet with a trained professional to check their child’s physical development, problem solving skills and personal social skills. They’ll receive information to help meet the next milestone, and referrals to other resources if more assessment is needed.

Kindergarten Readiness Assessments are also available for children ages 3.5 to 5 years old.
