Superintendent Announces Retirement
Hopkins County Schools Superintendent Dr. Deanna Ashby will retire effective June 30, 2021.

“Upon reflection of our achievements together and the positive direction of the district, I believe the time is right for me to close my chapter as Superintendent of Hopkins County Schools,” she said in her retirement letter. “As I depart, I want to thank the board of education for having faith in me through the years and especially during the pandemic.”

Ashby has worked in the district for 29 years, serving as superintendent since 2016. Accomplishments during her tenure include the following:

  • Placing school resource officers at every school to make our campuses safer
  • Building a top-notch district leadership team of principals and directors that face every situation with bravery and courage
  • Creating the Inclusivity Committee and HCS Health Task Force to provide greater resources for our students and staff
  • Providing greater opportunities for communication with students, staff, and parents to increase feedback and develop a strategic system of response
  • Fostering the #TeamHopkins philosophy and culture of working together across the district sharing ideas so that we are the best choice possible for our students and community.

She asked the #TeamHopkins family to continue to serve as giant slayers and lion chasers for our students and each other. “We will always be One Team – One Mission – One Community for our students!”
2021-2022 School Calendar
Hopkins County Board of Education has set the calendar for the 2021-2022 school year. We plan to operate under the Traditional Calendar, which is shared below. The first day for students will be Wednesday, Aug. 11. We want to inform parents the board also approved a variable calendar in case modifications are needed due to the pandemic or other extenuating circumstances. Both calendars can be viewed on the district website.

#LionChaser / #GiantSlayer
Kendra Davis - BSMS Custodian
Kendra Davis, a custodian at Browning Springs Middle School, was honored with the #LionChaser / #GiantSlayer Award at the Feb. 22 Board of Education meeting. While she does not work directly with children, one of the students reported that she is his favorite adult at Browning Springs. She does not judge him and treats him in a positive manner, he said. This student has made significant gains this school year and has become motivated to complete his work. Ms. Davis treats students and staff with kindness, and you can tell she truly cares about the kids in the school. As we know, it takes only one adult to make a difference in a kid’s life! #TeamHopkins
HCCHS Cafe Staff
The Hopkins County Central High School cafeteria staff received the #LionChaser / #GiantSlayer Award at the Feb. 22 Board of Education meeting. They were honored for the incredible job they have done feeding their community! During the months following the March 2020 shutdown, they worked harder than ever to make sure students were fed during a time of extreme stress. Each day, buses would roll up to the cafeteria and the ladies would load extremely heavy coolers filled with food for students onto the buses. No grumbling was heard. Those honored include cafeteria manager Donna Stanley, Anita Crick, Sarah Hoyle, Brailee Ladd, Sheila Smith, and Felicia Willett. These staff members show an outstanding commitment to our students!
Meal Program Updates
Please share updated meal information with your students!

Starting Wednesday, March 3, Remote Learning students may pick up a meal pack at any of our schools from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or during late pickup at Earlington Elementary, Grapevine Elementary, Hanson Elementary, Madisonville North Hopkins High, and West Hopkins School from 2-5:30 p.m. Meal pickup is only for remote learners.

Any of our students may get one breakfast and one lunch at community stops on Wednesdays. A list of community stops is posted at the following website:

First United Bank Supports FRYSCs
First United Bank presented a $600 donation in honor of Family Resource Youth Service Center Week. The bank is a continual supporter of our FRYSCs and have given about $2,500 during the pandemic. Money is raised when employees give a small donation to wear jeans and tennis shoes to work. We thank them for this valuable support!
Serving the Community
South Hopkins Middle School students and staff are giving back to the community through a service project making sleep mats for homeless people. Students cut up plastic grocery bags and loop them together into “plarn” – plastic yarn. Five staff members are crocheting the mats. It takes about 800 bags to make one mat. Individuals have brought in donated bags, and donations were received from Big Lots and Market Place. The project was the idea of school secretary Dawn Miller. The first donation of mats has already been delivered to Hopkins County Assistance Center.
