Preschool Winter Animals Theme
This week in Preschool our theme was Winter Animals. The children learned that there are animals that hibernate all winter. We read books that explained what the animals do to prepare for hibernation. Some gather their food and put it in their burrow while some bulk up and eat their food before going into hibernation. As a class project, we made our own" Bear's Den." Each student brought in their own stuffed animal and placed them in our classroom den. Shhhhh! We don't want to wake them up before spring!
Preschool Celebrates Kabir's Birthday

Our preschooler, Kabir, had a surprise on his birthday when a special reader joined our Zoom room. His mom joined us to read, Pete and Cat, Pete's Big Lunch. The children in our class decorated beautiful paper cupcakes with a little birthday message. These cupcake colorings and photos of the birthday boy were compiled to make a Preschool birthday keepsake.
Preschool Celebrates Valentines Day

Valentine’s week was celebrated with extra love and kindness in Preschool. The children started the week virtually with a lesson on drawing Lady Love Bugs. We continued in class creating “heart” people. Using paper hearts and accordion strips, the children glued the pieces to resemble people. On Friday, the children dressed in valentine colors and presented their own valentine cards that they created at home for their classmates. Each card was created with love and kindness toward their friends. Click Here to See More Images
Preschool Celebrates Back History Month

Preschoolers celebrated Black History Month with their own presentations. With the help of their parents, our youngest group in school did a little research on some famous Black Americans. The class brought in hand made posters of famous inventors, athletes, entertainers and scientists. The children shared their projects with their friends while practicing public speaking. They were eager to share the name and what the person did. Some dressed up, brought in props and danced...all relating to their famous person. The children were so proud of their work and it showed!
Dental Week in Preschool

Brush, brush, brush your teeth, brush them twice a day! Those were the words chanted by our preschoolers. The children learned the importance of keeping their teeth healthy by brushing, flossing and eating the right foods. They were asked to bring in pictures of food which they then sorted onto happy or unhappy teeth. Then using marshmallows as teeth, the children made replicas of their mouths.

Pre-Kindergarten Learns
Pre-Kindergarten Ground Hog Day

No amount of snow can stop the Pre-Kindergarten children from celebrating Ground Hog's Day. We all enjoyed a video about this little creature that lives in a burrow. This burrow protects the groundhog from predators. Every February 2nd, the groundhog becomes a meteorologist and he or she is expected to predict if there will be an early spring. We had a personal prediction from our very own Cedar Hill Prep Phil. The children really enjoyed meeting him.
Pre-Kindergarten Dental Week

February is Dental Health Month and the Pre-Kindergarten classes learned all about the proper ways in which we keep our mouths healthy. We discussed the foods that we should eat to help our teeth stay strong and healthy and those kinds of foods that are not good for our teeth. The children enjoyed making their "teeth crowns" and wore them proudly on their heads.

Pre-Kindergarten Celebrates Manny's Mom's Birthday

Mrs. Martinez, one of CHP's third-grade teachers, AKA "Manny's mom," celebrated her birthday with the Pre-Kindergarten class. Mrs. Martinez joined Manny's class on Zoom to enjoy some birthday fun..

Pre-Kindergarten Celebrates
Mrs. Holsteins Birthday

Happy birthday to our very own Preschool teacher Mrs. Holstein. Mrs. Holstein stopped by the Pre-Kindergarten room to celebrate her big day "GoNoodle" style. Wishing Mrs. Holstein many more happy birthdays!
Pre-Kindergarten Celebrates Black History Month
Black History Month is celebrated yearly to remember important events and achievements. The Pre-Kindergarten children honored these achievements with their first research paper.  Every child chose an African American person of importance and researched what he or she accomplished. Each child was required to print a sentence or two about his or her person. The children did a fantastic job as they presented their research papers to their class.
Kindergarten Celebrates Chinese New Year
Both Kindergarten classes learned all about Chinese New Year! Stories and traditions were shared about this very special celebration that lasts for 15 days. This year, Chinese New Year began on February 12th. During this time, families exchange gifts such as red envelopes containing money, and eat special foods to symbolize prosperity and family unity. Chinese dragons are a symbol of strength in China's culture and bring good luck to people. Celebrations include a dragon dance and fireworks! The Kindergarten students created dragon masks in celebration of Chinese New Year. Click Here to See More Images

Grade 1 Black History Presentations
First graders at CHP presented Our Peace Cake Living History show on Friday, February 26, 2021. Our students were provided lines to study and perform during the presentation. One group was virtual while the other group was present in school. The presentation was performed with social distancing and masks. Our first graders were amazing! Each child provided information on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and helped to create a peace cake with layers of quotes from Dr. King’s life. With the help of teachers and parents, our students rewarded us with an outstanding experience.
Grade 2 Celebrate Friendship

Valentine's Day is a day of friendship in 2nd grade. With the help of our class moms, in-class students joined our virtual students to learn more about the history of the day and to enjoy the book, Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch, which centers around the theme of how a little kindness can spread a long way.  Also, in lieu of individual cards, each 2nd grader created one special card addressed to all classmates. The cards were compiled by our class mothers and presented in a slide show that was sweet and so thoughtful!
Grade 2 Winter Writing

After reading the story, What do Snowmen Do at Night? by Carolyn Buehner, 2nd graders wrote creative stories describing what snowmen might do at night. The children did a great job applying their writing skills to describe exciting snowy adventures that snowmen can accomplish during the night!
Grade 2 Ocean Project

Deserts, rainforests, ponds and oceans - 2nd graders explored these to gain a deeper understanding of how living things survive in their habitats. As a learning extension, the children researched an ocean animal and completed a fact sheet, indicating their sources of information. Then, the 2nd graders illustrated their assigned animal and wrote a speech bubble about how the animal survives in the ocean. In addition to presenting their fun facts and illustrations to their classmates, the children also posted on Padlet, a virtual bulletin board. We discovered just how unique and vital all animals are in each habitat. Click Here to See More Images
Grade 2 Black History Month
Second grade celebrated Black History Month by creating and presenting an Inspirational Quote Quilt. The children reflected on inspirational quotes by both historical and current notable Black Americans. After reciting the quote, the children presented their illustrated quilt square, explaining the message within the quote and how it relates to their life today. Thank you 2nd graders for a fabulous performance.
Grade 2 February Celebrations
Virtual and in-class learners recently joined together to wish their classmate, Vihaan, a Happy Birthday. Vihaan's mom joined us as we sang Happy Birthday and listened to Vihaan read Zach and Lucy and the Yoga Zoo. The funny story brought many smiles to his friends.
Also, in February, the two classes learned about the traditions surrounding Chinese New Year and the Year of the Ox. 2nd graders enjoyed a reading of The Empty Pot, set in China and centered around the theme of honesty, narrated by actor Rami Malek on Storyline. The day ended with the children drawing their own red lanterns to welcome in the New Year.
Grade 3 Mystery Reader
On Friday, February 12, third graders were treated to a wonderful mystery reader, Grayson's mom! She read an eye-opening excerpt from a non-fiction book titled Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  She was a fierce dissenter with a serious collar game. A legendary, self-described “flaming feminist litigator” who made the world more equal, and an intergenerational icon affectionately known as the Notorious RBG. This was a great book for students to hear since we had studied her earlier this year in Social Studies. Even though she is gone, her legacy will live on! Thank you, Grayson's mom, for making our Friday morning inspirational and fun! Grade 3 had Two More Mystery Readers for February
On Friday February 26th, we had an exciting day with two Mystery Readers! Our first Mystery Reader of the day was Samaira's mom. She read to us Henry's Freedom Box: A True Story From the Underground Railroad. This tied in perfectly with Black History Month and our living history museum project! The story is about a boy named Henry Brown who doesn't know how old he is because records of slaves' birthdays were not kept. All the time, Henry dreamed about freedom, but that dream seemed farther away than ever when he was torn from his family and put to work in a warehouse. Henry grew up and married, but he was again devastated when his family was sold at the slave market. Then one day, as he lifted a crate at the warehouse, he knew exactly what he had to do: He mailed himself to the North. After an arduous journey in the crate, Henry finally had a birthday -- his first day of freedom. The students truly enjoyed this story.
In the afternoon on Friday, February 26th, we had our second Mystery Reader of the day, Anabi's mom! She read to us an excerpt from a collection of stories entitled ISurvived- True Stories- Five Epic Disasters. From the author of the New York Times-bestselling I Survived series come five harrowing true stories of survival, featuring real kids in the midst of epic disasters. We learned about the Titanic disaster from a real life survivor who had been a young child at the time. The students were wide-eyed listening to the story and could not believe it was true! Thank you to both parents for bringing some educational fun to our Friday!

Grade 3 Living History Museum
On Friday February 26th, CHP participated in our annual Living History Museum for Black History Month. The Third Graders focused on authors and poets. The students created “People Posters” based on the person they researched. They were then asked to memorize a speech, becoming their person. Students got creative and even dressed up in an outfit their person would wear! Great job 3rd graders!!
Grade 4 Living History Presentations
On Friday, February 26th, Grade 4 students transformed their on-campus classroom and home classrooms into Living History Museums that celebrated many Black-American scientists and inventors who have made important contributions to our society. Dressed in costumes reflecting the period in which these inventors lived, the students’ desktops became the backdrop for their “museum” displays and research papers. The 4th grade “inventors” delivered speeches that discussed the challenges the inventors faced and their amazing successes. Congratulations Grade 4 for your outstanding presentations!!!
A special thank-you to our Grade 4 families for your assistance with this
six-week project that led to their children’s performances! And…a special thank-you to Ms. Iyengar and Ms. Nandini for their technical expertise that made our “hybrid” presentation possible! Click Here to See More Images

Grade 5 Living History Presentations

The 5th-grade Social Studies class presented their own " 60 Minutes " show for their annual Living History presentation. The students' studied interviewing techniques, how to formulate questions, and other interviewing strategies.
Each student picked a Black American who had an impact on history. The students wrote their own scripts and practiced asking effective questions that would engage an audience. The students learned so much from their "60 Minutes" presentations. We may even have some future journalist in our midst! Great job to all our 5ht grade students for their hard work and exciting presentations!
Grade 6 Living History Presentations

For this year's Living History presentation, Mrs. Callahan's 6th grade Social Studies classes studied the political and social system of Apartheid in South Africa. The students studied the lives and speeches of famous South African activists. They also studied poems, songs, and dances that voiced the oppression of the people.
Students choreographed an original Stepping dance routine led by Motu Odukoya. Stepping is a dance form that grew out of the mines in South Africa. Additionally, the students sang "Senzeni Na," a Zulu protest song led by Jacob Toler. The students did an amazing job of telling the story of this period of racial segregation and discrimination for Black South Africans.
Grades 7 and 8 Living History Presentations
Grades 7 and 8 presented Living History Night, in honor of Black History Month and Equal Rights Trailblazers. Thirty-six students presented 5 to 8 minute first-person speeches in the name of key historical figures, some well known but many lesser known, and in all cases shed light on the difficult decision-making each figure had to go through. Our audience had a chance to choose among seven themed Zoom sessions over the three hour event. Students impressed the audience with their research, their command of the complexity of the figures' lives, and their expressive and dramatic portrayals. Click Here to See More Images
Grades 7 and 8 Black History Math
In the spirit of Black History Month, Mrs. Lekhi's 7th and 8th grade Math students integrated their curriculum with important facts about African American history. By observing key milestones related to abolishing slavery, segregation, and finally gaining equal rights, 7th grade students were calculating the percentage of time in American history that the African American population has faced adversity. By analyzing the numbers through different calculations, we can better understand and appreciate the great efforts of our African American heroes who have withstood several hardships and have fought hard for freedom. The 8th grade Math students did an activity related to Quadratic Functions where they learned about key, important contributions by African American men and women in the field of Math and Science.

Pre-Kindergarten Celebrates Black History Month by honoring the Late Celia Cruz
During Spanish class with Ms. Morales, on Wednesday, February 17th, Ms. Richardson's Pre-Kindergarten B class celebrated Black History Month by learning about the wondrous life of the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz. Celia Cruz was an Afro-Cuban pop star and anti-revolutionary figure who impacted the entire world with her music.
Not only did the Pre-Kindergarten students discuss the impactful life of Celia Cruz, they also participated in many cultural based activities, including learning about Cuba's history and culture, coloring a lively salsa dancer and bongo player, and of course, dancing. Mrs. Davidson even stopped by and danced alongside Harrison! Celebrating Black History Month by honoring the late Celia Cruz was both moving and fun.
