Diary of a Middle School Kid

Samantha is a 6th grader at Hadley whose happy place is with her cat. She hopes that some day her cat will teach her cat language so that she can learn all of his secrets!

In the meantime, Samantha would like to travel to Japan in search of fun supplies for her future sewing shop.

Back at home, you can find Samantha staying up late watching her favorite movie, Nerve.

Mid-Lit: Peer Book Reviews

The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal  Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott
I'm Colin, and I am an 8th grader at Glen Crest Middle School. I'll be reviewing The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel .

I liked The Alchemyst because of the amount of depth the story had. The two main characters, twins Sophie and Josh, find a man known as Nicholas Flamel. They travel around the world and learn different magics such as Air and Fire. Along with the main antagonist, Dee, they fight for control over the Codex, which contains the power of everlasting life.  I give this book five stars.

Readers who like fantasy and magic would enjoy this six-book series. Check out  The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel .
THANK YOU
. ..from Tom Malinowski.

Between June and August, we had over 50 middle school volunteers help in the Youth Department! We are very grateful, and we appreciate the time you spent helping with book displays, preparing for programs, and making our department look clean and orderly! Beginning this month, we will refer to our middle school volunteers as The Middle Squad.

It's a new school year: Be prepared!
  • Get Involved - With a wide variety of school activities to discover, pursue the ones that you like and the ones that will provide a challenge. Getting involved is also a great way to make new friends. Don't forget to check out volunteer opportunities in your community.
  • Be Organized - It's important to be on time and know where to go. Have a calendar that's easy to access to help you keep track of events. Share your calendar with the right grownups, so they know where you are.
  • Concentrate - Focusing all your attention throughout the school day is a challenge. Avoid distractions such as electronic devices. Try not to be overly talkative at the beginning of a class or activity.
  • Stay Happy - Having a positive attitude is easier than having a negative one.  When you meet new friends, it's ok to feel shy. Ask open ended questions like, What book are you reading? Where's one place in the world you want to visit? Be supportive by cheering for teammates and giving excited encouragement!
