This past Month Paul and Paula Lundberg Traveled to Eau Claire for the Northwest Synod's Walking Together Event. Here is what they had to say about it...
Walking Together-Practice NOT Perfect!
On Sat., February 22, we had the privilege of attending the gathering of hundreds of other Lutherans from the Northwest WI Synod in Eau Claire. We gathered at the Davies Center at the UW Eau Claire. We began with a LARGE worship service. Something we don't usually get to participate in while in Bayfield, is that large worship experience! What a joy!
It was followed with an exciting and stimulating day of workshops! 41 of them to be exact!!! The delightful thing was that we were able to choose from all of the offerings, what interested us most. All of them dealt with personal and congregational wellness, growing and sharing faith, congregational ideas, and challenges within the church in our relationship to the world.
The challenge that seemed to weigh heaviest on everyone's mind was what we can do in the midst of these turbulent times, converting our faith into action. One of these workshops was "Preaching, Politics, and the Prophets." Jesus lived in turbulent political times. His teachings and parables were about doing the right thing in the sight of God. His teachings are timeless, relevant then and relevant today, 2,000+ years later. Preaching the Gospel was and is political. Not Red or Blue or Purple or even Green, but how we should be treating one another and all of God's creation. It is the politics of compassion, empathy, caring, and love. Can we remain silent when the Gospel is swept aside and replaced with the politics of entitlement, apathy, fear, and hate? How did pastors proclaim the law and gospel during the civil war, the civil rights movement, or the Vietnam war protests? How did pastors in Germany preach in the shadow of Hitler's Nazism? How do we, like those who have gone before us, speak truth to power, and counter oppressive political speech with Gospel rhetoric? Sounds like a good book study topic!
Another of these workshops was called "AMMPARO-Not just a Pretty word."
Translated, it means Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection, Advocacy, Representation and Opportunities. At that workshop an interactive presentation helped us to understand the depths of the desperation that would lead good people from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala to leave all that they have to find another home. Imagine how desperate you would need to be. Self sacrifices are huge-loss of home, family, community, friends, support systems, personal finances, and physical safety. And then. . .even your children! How can we help??? Is this too political??? What about the gospel?
Stay tuned, coming up this spring you will hear more about becoming an AMMPARO church. What does it mean for us? How can we help? We hope that you will become involved as we attempt to figure out what the role of Bethesda can be.
As you can maybe tell, we had a very good day in Eau Claire. We hope that you, too, will want to go next year. Let's take a group in 2021! Just think about how many workshops we could all attend, and the ideas we could bring back to Bethesda.

Ruthann was recently hospitalized for severe back pain. She has a lower lumbar compression fracture and L1, L2, and L3 are bulging. Marilyn was diagnosed with stage four cancer that has metastasized from her breast cancer 15 years ago. Marilyn has finished her chemo treatments and will be part of a experimental drug and treatment plan. The drug Ibrance plus two shots costs $10,000 for 21 days. She had a scan and tests Thursday, February 27 to see how the previous treatments have worked. The only information she has received so far from the scans is that the liver cancer is diminishing. Keeping you in our prayers Marilyn!!

Shylo gave birth to triplets at 23 weeks. Her little girl and as well as her mother passed away just before Christmas. The two boys Rys and Leo (13 weeks) are still in the NICU but are both over 6 lbs. They are doing great but not totally in the clear yet. I imagine they will get to go home this month.
