The season is off to a spectacular start! Congratulations to our Zone 10 members who topped the podium in the $100,000 USHJA WCHR West Coast Hunter Spectacular at Desert International Horse Park. Jenny Karazissis and Big Shot (Dulcie Lou Morris, owner) sealed the win. In second place was Nick Haness and HH Elmo (Lindsay Maxwell, owner), and Jamie Sailor with Skyhawk (Laura Wasserman, owner) rounded out the top three.
The 2021 Zone 10 North American Youth Championship (NAYC) Selection Trials got off to a rousing start with dozens of riders navigating technical and demanding tracks at Desert Circuit VIII. We were glad to see many participants in each of the four categories: Young Riders, Juniors, Children’s, and the all-new Pre-Juniors. We can’t wait for a fantastic season in 2021!
In other exciting news, registration is now open for the 2021 USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge and USHJA Adult Horsemanship Quiz Challenge. It’s time to put your horsemanship knowledge to the test! We also want to remind you the deadline to apply to the Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund/USHJA Emerging Athletes Program is April 1.
We are so proud of all of the USHJA Affiliate Organizations within our zone. Throughout the year, we will be highlighting each of them and this month we are featuring the LEGIS League.
We look forward to seeing you out there competing and representing Zone 10!

Big Win for Big Shot and Jenny Karazissis in $100,000 USHJA World Championship Hunter Rider West Coast Hunter Spectacular
|
|
In its debut at the Desert International Horse Park, the $100,000 USHJA WCHR West Coast Hunter Spectacular saw Jenny Karazissis and Big Shot claim the victory in a field of 69. Nick Haness aboard HH Elmo and Jamie Sailor with Skyhawk rounded out the top three.
"It was very nice that there weren't a whole lot of related distances, just the one line on the side which really tested their scope in both directions. I felt my horses try really hard there and I liked that," said Karazissis of the evening's courses.

The LEGIS League has something for everyone! It is an awards program, sponsored by LEGISequine.com, for hunters, jumpers, and equitation riders with categories from walk-trot through 1.10m jumpers. LEGIS League also offers five medal finals, ranging from the 2’0’’ Mini Medal to the 1.0m Jumper Medal.
They are passionate about helping grow the base of our sport and creating a welcoming experience for competitors. “It’s a very friendly and inclusive program,” commented LEGIS League Program Coordinator Danielle Skaar. “Rather than giving year-end high point awards, we use a finals format so you don’t have to chase points all year. Once you earn four points, you are qualified to go to the finals. Our membership fee is only $30 for the year and that includes however many horses you ride. Plus, your trainer does not have to be a member and neither does the horse’s owner.”
In February, LEGIS League held its 2020 Finals at the Coachella Valley Classic, co-produced by LEG Shows & Events and Desert International Horse Park. “We offer traditional medal finals in addition to hunter, jumper, and equitation finals that run in a classic format for each division,” Danielle explained. “You ride in the classes of your normal division followed by a special LEGIS League class. Those two scores are combined and give you your final placing for the year.”
“Our members enjoy LEGIS League because it’s easy to qualify and earn great prizes,” Danielle said. “We award prizes and ribbons to the top ten riders in each final. We give our members a lot of recognition through our social media and marketing channels.”
The LEGIS League is proud to be a USHJA Affiliate Organization. “As a smaller organization, the USHJA Affiliate Grant has been extremely helpful to us,” Danielle noted. “Being affiliated with USHJA also gives our members fantastic discounts and access to lots of educational programs. I encourage our members to participate in the Horsemanship Quiz Challenge (HQC) and I think it’s important for riders of all levels to gain horsemanship knowledge.”
LEGIS League members can also apply to represent LEGIS League at the 2'0'' and 2'6'' Affiliate Championships at The Las Vegas National Horse Show. “I think it’s an excellent opportunity to recognize our members and offer them an opportunity to compete at the National Championship Horse Show. We open an online application and our members write essays explaining why they would like to compete.”
“In 2019, we sent a junior member to represent LEGIS League at the National Championship Horse Show,” Danielle added. “When I was at Desert International Horse Park last month, her mom approached me and thanked me for that opportunity. It’s moments like that make it feel really special to be a USHJA Affiliate Organization.”
