IRMO HS ACHIEVES
NATIONAL MAGNET SCHOOL CERTIFICATION
The Lexington-Richland School District Five high school was among 21 schools nationwide to successfully complete a rigorous nine-month evaluation process and “demonstrate through evidence, reflection, and strategic action that it has established the best practices entailed in the Magnet School Standards of Excellence."

The national certification process is based on the Standards of Excellence and the five pillars of magnet schools: diversity, innovative curriculum and professional development, academic excellence, high-quality instructional systems, and family and community partnerships. Together, these qualities define the common elements of exemplary magnet programs .

Irmo High School was one of five schools in School District Five to receive a federal Magnet School Assistant Program (MSAP) grant in 2013 to bolster magnet offerings. At the start of the 2014-2015 school year, Irmo High School officially opened the doors to the new International School of the Arts. A wide array of courses in dance, theater, music and visual arts are available through the magnet program; which aims to develop lifelong creators and patrons of the arts through rigorous standards-based, arts-infused learning. MSAP funds have complemented plans for the magnet program and added unique opportunities for students, including master classes with professional artists.
This certification makes Irmo High School the first certified magnet school in School District Five. “I am so incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication by Irmo High School International School for the Arts in attaining recognition as a Nationally Certified Magnet School,” said Sara Wheeler, Magnet School Program Director for School District Five

ARTIST ADRIANA VIDAL
Art and animals have always been a part of her life but for years she only had time for the occasional doodle or commission. Currently she is working predominantly with watercolor and ink to create mixed media pieces focused on her love of nature with an eye to showcasing endangered species. She also creates 3 dimensional shadow box pieces that are generally nature scenes that combine 3D items with paintings.  In addition, she creates hand bound journals, small polymer clay or paper clay sculptures, and small acrylic paintings. She is happy to do commissioned pieces; she specializes
in painting Pet Portraits.
As an artist in Los Angeles, she participated in several art shows, fundraisers, and holiday boutiques and had studio space at the Hawthorne Arts Complex. She was a member of The Word is Art Gallery from 2013 until 2014; in addition to selling her art at the gallery, she helped provide social media support for the members. After that she was a member at the Ten Women Gallery on Main Street in Santa Monica, CA until 2015 where she sold her art and wrote the monthly newsletter.
Since moving to Columbia, SC in 2016, she has become a member of 701 Center for Contemporary Art (701CCA), Crooked Creek Art League (CCAL) and the SC Watermedia Society (SCWS).

About this piece
“Champion Trees” is an 11”x14” piece using a combination of watercolors, watercolor pencils, and sepia ink.
Her inspiration was a photo she took
during a visit to Congaree Park.
The trees were just amazing and the interplay of the vine on the tree with the shadows created by the vine’s leaves just made her want to paint it.

NATIONAL COFFEE
ICE CREAM DAY
If you are a coffee lover and a lover of ice cream, then this is the food holiday you look forward to every year. National Coffee Ice Cream Day is observed annually on September 6th.
This creamy and caffeinated ice cream treat is sure to satisfy your taste buds. There are those that are not a fan of cold coffee . However, when it is whipped with cream and sugar, it takes on a magical taste of its own. Coffee ice cream has been around for many years. In 1869, coffee ice cream was used in a parfait and a recipe appeared in a 1919 cookbook for an Egg Coffee, consisting of cream, crushed ice and coffee syrup. According to Foodtimeline.org, coffee ice cream has been a standard flavor on the Howard Johnson’s restaurant menu since at least the 1960′s, along with vanilla, chocolate, banana, macaroon, and coconut.

NATIONAL READ A BOOK DAY
National Read A Book Day is observed annually on September 6th. On August 9th, we all celebrated National Book Lovers Day. While these bookish days may seem similar, National Read a Book Day invites us ALL to grab a book we might enjoy and spend the day reading.
Don’t keep it to yourself.

Share the experience! Read aloud either to children or to grandparents. Read to your pets or to your stuffed animals and plants.
Reading improves memory and concentration as well as reduces stress. Older adults who spend time reading show a slower cognitive decline and tend to participate in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetime. Books are an inexpensive entertainment, education and time machine, too!
