From the Rector: Sunday on the Lawn

Dear friends,

This Sunday, August 2, at 9:30 a.m., will bring our first in-person Sunday service since March 8. It has been a long time, and the world has changed a lot since then.

It's been even longer than that for me. My last Sunday service before starting paternity leave was January 19! I've felt that lack keenly over these last six months, even as I've been grateful for the ways we continue to worship, learn, and care for one another at a distance.

So I'm looking forward to this Sunday's outdoor service on the playground lawn. I hope you'll plan to be part of the service, whether in person or online. Thanks to our Zoom crew, we plan to set up a screen and speakers so that those who are participating from home will be able to be seen and heard during the service--to share prayer requests and thanksgivings, and perhaps even to serve as readers. We don't know for sure how well it will work yet. There are a lot of things we don't know yet: this is our first time doing this. We will learn as we go, and we'll need to be flexible, give one another grace, and laugh a little at the glitches that will inevitably come.

If you're planning to attend the service in person:
  • Remember to register in advance here. Depending on attendance, we may not be able to accommodate people who don't preregister.
  • Remember to dress for being outdoors, including sturdy shoes, a hat and/or sun protection, and whatever else you think you'll need.
  • Please plan to arrive between 9:00 and 9:20. It will take some time to check people in, so arriving early will help us begin on time at 9:30.
  • Entrance will be via the Jerusalem Courtyard on Mendocino Avenue. It may be most convenient to plan to park on the street, or in the city lot just across the street. If you park in the Cherry Street lot, you'll need to go around to the Mendocino side to enter.
  • Remember your face covering. Everyone needs to wear one. We will have some extras, but ask you to bring your own.
  • Remember that if you have any symptoms of illness, you need to stay home, for the sake of others as well as yourself.
  • Finally, everyone will be asked to sign this Agreement for On-Campus Activities. You can help check-in move faster by printing this out and bringing it with you.
If you're planning to participate online:
  • You're welcome to participate on Zoom, or on Facebook, as usual (see the directions below under "Online Services").
  • Remember that the service this week is at 9:30, not 10:00 as we've been doing.
  • There won't be an on-screen bulletin for this service. Instead everyone will be encouraged to follow along in the Book of Common Prayer. If you don't have a Prayer Book at home, you can download the section that will be used in this week's service here.
I'm grateful to our Task Force on Regathering for creating a road map for these outdoor services. My prayer is that they will provide a structure that helps us stay strong and even thrive in our ministry during this ongoing time of upheaval and distance.

Finally: please pray for those who are sick, those who are suffering, and those who are losing income with the expiration of federal unemployment benefits this week. Our worship life is at the center of our life as a congregation--but it's hollow if it's not matched by a commitment to love and serve our neighbors. Our common prayer is not primarily for ourselves and our own benefit, but for the life of the world.

I'm looking forward to seeing you this Sunday, whether it's on the lawn or online.

In Christ's love,

From the Director of Spiritual Formation...

It's that time of year. The summer days are numbered, school of some sort is on the horizon, and our program year at Incarnation is being created.  We enter into this time not with familiarity but uncertainty. I've been thinking now more than ever we are called to dig deeper, to find the God within and hold tight. A time to pray for the health of our community, and the strength to be present in a time of trial. God knows this place and has been here many times. God has the strength and wisdom to be our companion, to be our grounding and strength when we aren't sure we have enough to go the distance.

Without a doubt God possesses  enough love and wisdom to sustain us all beyond our understanding. That is what we have in store for us this program year which will include chances to deepen our connection to the God within us and among us. There will be both solo and communal opportunities that I'm excited to share. Until then, the next time you can find a moment alone, tap into the God within and just be. Take note of the blessings in your life at this moment. Can you come up with 2? or 5? and just be with them.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.    Lamentations 3:22-23

May you feel God's abiding love for you
Peace,
Daphne Vernon
Director of Spiritual Formation

Church Campus Update
In accordance with both state and county orders, our campus remains closed for most activities. At present the only in-person gatherings permitted are the following:
  • Minimum church business needed to maintain our basic operations (this includes staff, vestry, and approved office volunteers doing tasks that can't be done from home)
  • Sunday Open Table programs and preparation (permitted under the provision for charitable feeding programs)
  • Limited in-person worship gatherings (permitted under a special provision for worship services; see "Outdoor Worship" above)

We do not currently have permission for any other groups to meet. Please contact Alison Cole or Stephen Shaver with questions about activities on the church campus.
