E3 | EXCEEDING EVERY EXPECTATION!

This week we will already begin our third week of the new school year as a digital one-to-one middle school (story below). I would like to thank our students, teachers, staff, and families for their support in getting August off on such a positive start.
As for this issue, you will find several short pieces illustrating how our teachers have prepared for the school year ahead as well as special recognitions. On this latter item, if you should happen to see either Ms. Davis (Teacher of the Year) or Mrs. Rainey (Support Person of the Year) on campus this week, please take a moment to congratulate them. We are very proud of their success having been nominated for the annual awards by their colleagues.

Teacher Recognition
Teachers returned Monday, August 6th for our annual pre-planning week. During the faculty meeting to welcome teachers back and review school data, Mrs. Rogers recognized staff for perfect and outstanding attendance and outstanding performance from the 2017-2018 school year.

- Perfect attendance: Desiree Jackson, Robin Williams, Sonya Worrell
- Outstanding attendance, staff missing less than two days of work: Sara Cooley, Coach Phillips, and Miles Zakai
- Mrs. Curry - Outstanding student performance in ELA - 64% pass rate and 45% learning gains.
- Mr. Vinson - Outstanding student performance in Algebra 1 - 90% pass rate and learning gains.
- Mrs. Codner - Outstanding student performance in Civics - 81% pass rate.
- Ms. Cooley - Outstanding student performance in science - 68% pass rate.

Dr. David Hardrick as the North Learning Community' Assistant Principal of the Year. Dr. Hardrick is the Assistant Principal of Instruction at Meadowbrook Middle School. He supports student services, guidance, and oversee's the math and ESE department. Congrats Dr. Hardrick!

Professional Development
Meadowbrook teachers attend RCA in Atlanta over the summer break
Some of the Meadowbrook Middle School teachers had an opportunity to attend The Ron Clark Academy (RCA) in Atlanta, Georgia where they were able to learn how to implement academic rigor, passion, and creativity in the classroom. RCA is a demonstration school where educators can engage with staff and students to learn and observe best practices in action and attend hands-on workshops.
While at RCA, teachers participated in the RCA experience and learned better ways to engage with students, promote academic rigor, and create a climate and culture that promotes success. MMS has adopted some of these strategies and are implementing them into the classroom. Students and teachers are embracing the change and excited about having fun, while learning and maintaining high academics.

Meadowbrook Middle School's Teacher of the Year & Support Person of the Year for 2018-2019
Meadowbrook just announced its 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year and Support Person of the Year.
Ms. Dionne Davis (Teacher of the Year) and
Mrs. Shelia Rainey (Support Person of the Year) were both surprised and greeted with cheers of congratulations from MMS staff members. Ms. Davis is a 6th grade English/Language Arts teacher and Mrs. Rainey is the school's bookkeeper. MMS is proud of both ladies and their outstanding work at Meadowbrook Middle School.

TFA Partners with Meadowbrook Teachers
About Teacher For America
Teach For America-Orlando (TFA-Orlando) was founded in 2015 with the vision that one day, all children in Orlando will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. An education that helps students achieve academic and personal outcomes that empower them to exercise true choice in their future and to be the next generation of leaders in our nation. Teach For America carries out this vision by enlisting, developing, and mobilizing our nation's most promising leaders in local OCPS schools to fuel the movement for educational equity and excellence.
Teach For America has been a proud partner of Meadowbrook Middle School since 2015, placing a total of 11 teachers. Overall, there are currently about 30 Teach For America-Orlando teachers across 9 schools in OCPS serving approximately 2,500 students.
An Example of TFA at Meadowbrook: Students win at 2017 Science Competition
In February of 2017, two Teach For America science teachers at Meadowbrook Middle School led (right) a group of students to win first AND second place in the middle school egg drop competition at the University of Central Florida's Southeastern Consortium of Minorities in Engineering (SECME) Regional Competition!
The competition was a fun way for our students to practice essential science skills like collecting data, creating a hypothesis, and conducting experiments. They were also were awarded third place OVERALL in the middle school division for outstanding averages in egg drop, banner/poster, mousetrap car, water bottle rocket, and computer coding. This was an enormous win for the Mustangs as there were over 600 students from 46 different schools in attendance.

Meadowbrook's Transition to a Digital One-to-One School
For the coming school year, Meadowbrook Middle School will be a one-to-one digital school. Each student is now assigned their own personal computer laptop. T-Mobile provided FREE hotspots to all of our students in need of internet service at home. A Digital Open House was held on Monday, July 30 where parents were provided information to support their understanding in how to access digital resources at home. The event also detailed ways parents can help students manage their device at home. With a turnout of around 200 participants, parents were given the tools to help their children be successful during the transition year.
Laptop distribution began on Thursday, August 2. Parents were able to come pick up the digital devices as well as receive further information ways to best utilize their new technology. The Meadowbrook team worked diligently to ensure the process ran smoothly and the needs of parents and students were met in an efficient and timely manner. After four days of distribution, more than half of our students had received their devices.
