A Note From Our Executive Director
Dear friend of 4Cs,

For over a year now, the Alameda County Emergency Child Care Response Team (ECCRT) has been meeting regularly to meet the ever-evolving and growing needs of our communities. Back in March 2020, myself and ECE leaders from across the county met up to twice daily to determine the needs of families, children, and child care providers across the county. We continue to meet regularly and work in partnership to support essential workers who needed child care and coordinate with child care sites, directors, and teachers to make sure that they have the support and tools they needed to keep their child care businesses open. The team coordinates child care payment assistance to parents and stipends and grants to child care businesses. The ECCRT continues to host webinars and information sessions for providers, distribute tens of thousands of personal protective equipment, health and safety, and cleaning supply essentials, and collaborate with Samuel Merritt University School of Nursing to provide nursing expertise to ECE businesses that remain open throughout the pandemic.

While the ripple of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are still being felt throughout the ECE community - and will be for a long time - these past two weeks have provided a glimmer of hope as the Alameda County ECCRT coordinated two COVID-19 clinics for our child care community and their family members. This past weekend, I spent my Saturday in the heart of Hayward checking in hundreds of our ECE community members in preparation for them to receive their vaccine. For some, this is the first time they or their loved ones left their home in 13 months because of their heightened risk for serious complications from the disease. For others, this clinic was a safe, welcoming place coordinated by a trusted group of agencies that they partner with all of the time without the stigma that other clinics may have. And for folks like Teddy*, a young man with autism, and his mom, a former educator and her son's biggest fan and advocate, this clinic was a place of warm welcoming smiles, accommodations and acceptance, and space where friendly helpers were there to "help make COVID-19 go away".
While we wish we could be the superpowers that Teddy hoped we had, it was a humbling experience to be part of the light at the end of this year of unknowns for Teddy, his mom, and the more than 600 others in our early care and education family who were vaccinated through these clinics.

As the ECCRT continues to meet, know that we at 4Cs of Alameda County - and our partners across the county - spend every day working to provide you with the tools you need to thrive now and when this time of unprecedented uncertainty finally is put behind us.

Be well,

Renee S. Herzfeld
Executive Director
