A Message from Our CEO, Janet Van Dyke, DVM, DACVSMR.
Spring is around the corner and we are busy making plans for the remainder of the year. Our April and May rehabilitation and acupuncture courses are almost sold out. We are watching COVID-19 guidelines closely, hoping we can increase class sizes to accommodate the growing number of veterinarians, physical therapists and veterinary nurses that want to pursue certification.
We are happy to announce that we graduated our first group of Certified Veterinary Acupuncture Therapists (CVATs) for 2021. CRI’s Veterinary Medical Acupuncture program was created for veterinarians looking for a more Western approach to acupuncture. Classes are small, taught by Bonnie Wright, DVM, DACVAA, cVMA, CCRP, CCRT, and her outstanding team. The focus is on how the patient’s neurophysiology reacts to the placement of the needles and there are plenty of demo dogs and cats for hands-on learning.
Registration is now open for Canine Sports Medicine, taught by Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR. Chris is widely known for her hands-on seminars covering everything from structure and function to ergogenic drugs impacting performance, gait training techniques, and sport-specific rehabilitation. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from a world-renowned expert, author, and past president of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Canine Sports Medicine will be held September 16-18, 2021, at CVSG in Littleton, Colorado.
There continues to be a big demand for The Business of Canine Rehabilitation, our online course that includes three live Zoom sessions. We have opened registration for our July Business class, which will have Zoom sessions on July 14, 21, and 28! If you want to learn how you can successfully incorporate rehabilitation into your practice, register now to reserve your space!
Also, a reminder that we have special programs for veterinary students, both in rehabilitation and acupuncture! Check out the special offers included in this newsletter.
Thanks once again to our faculty, staff, and students for the dedication and patience you have all shown over the past year. The days are getting warmer and hope is building that we will soon get back to a life that feels more “normal.” It can’t come too soon! In the meantime, please stay safe.
Regards,
Janet B. Van Dyke, DVM, Diplomate American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, CCRT
Founder and CEO

Thank you!"
– Sarah Hanley, DVM, CVAT, Redwood City, California

For the live module, we strongly recommend students attend Veterinary Medical Acupuncture for Sports Medicine/Rehabilitation Patients (Module 2). Students must watch the videos from Introduction to Veterinary Medical Acupuncture (Module 1) before taking the in-person module.

– Lynne Marshall, PT, CEEAA, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

In the Words of Our Students ...
"This course [Clinical Skills] really helped tie together the concepts that we learned in Intro. It was so practical and rewarding (and fun!). The new information was great, but it was also helpful to see some of the Intro material reviewed in a different context. ... Thank you all for your help and dedication in this course. It is so lovely to learn from people who are excited and passionate about their work, and I really appreciate it!"

Visit our website to learn more about our special discount for ACVSMR and VOS residents. Residents: join VOS to get 25% off the tuition!
"I absolutely loved this class. Chris's enthusiasm for research as well as her openness to people who are not in academia as nascent researchers was refreshing. As someone who went directly into practice rather than the internship route, it was very helpful in defining the research process from how to form a solid hypothesis from a germ of an idea all the way to writing the paper. It also provided a basis to read journal articles with a more critical eye. The tips that Chris provided from her years of experience in the research field were invaluable."
- Beth Ellen McNamara, DVM, CCRT, CVMA, CVAT, Harrison, Maine
"I learnt a great deal during this course and look forward to putting it into practice. Thank you."
- Tanya Grantham, BVSc, CVA, CCRP, CCBW, Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa
"Wonderful course - I learned so much."
- Sheradan Pate, DVM, CVA, CCRT, Pismo Beach, Hawaii

Submit Your Pain Case Study to IVAPM.

|
Effectiveness of Combined Acupuncture and Manual Therapy Relative to No Treatment for Canine Musculoskeletal Pain.
The Study: 47 client owned dogs with clinical signs of musculoskeletal pain participated in repeated measure prospective study evaluating the effectiveness of combined acupuncture and manual therapy. Outcome measure was an owner completed visual analog scale of 12 functional variables.
Study Limitations: Small study size, diagnostics where not completed to confirm why the patients had musculoskeletal pain, outcomes measures were subjective.
Impact on Clinical Practice: When in the treatment group, significant improvement in walk, trot, jump, rise from lying position and stiffness was seen after single treatment. Continued improvement in walk, trot, jump, rise from lying position, and stiffness was seen after the second treatment. In addition, owners reported changes in mood, attitude, and ability to go upstairs, but these observations were not statistically significant.
When in the non-treatment group, no improvements were seen.
For canine patients with musculoskeletal pain of unknown origin, receiving combined acupuncture and manual therapy appears to subjectively improve walking, trotting, jumping, rising and stiffness.

Evidence-Based Resources at Your Fingertips - From Canine Arthritis Resources & Education.
CRI is pleased to be a sponsor of Canine Arthritis Resources and Education (CARE). Osteoarthritis is one of the most common conditions you will see in your practice, with at least 1 in 5 dogs developing the disease in their lifetime. As the leading cause of chronic pain, OA can have a significant impact on the quality of life for your patients, and for your clients who are caring for dogs in pain.
While OA isn't curable, the earlier you can identify and manage it, the better impact you can have on your patients' quality of life. With CARE, you'll find tools, resources, and evidence-based information to help aid you in your practice.
|
|
CARE was founded by CRI faculty member Kristin Kirkby Shaw, DVM, MS, PhD, CCRT, DACVS, DACVSMR, as a central resource to answer the most common questions about OA that she encounters from colleagues around the world. The website covers everything from diagnosing developmental orthopedic diseases to nutrition and weight loss, rehabilitation, pain management, lifestyle modifications, and more. There are resources to share with clients, as well as extensive, evidence-based content for dog owners to help them manage their dog's OA at home. Visit the CARE website to learn more.

Veterinary Students: Have You Heard About the Changes to Our Rehabilitation and Acupuncture Certification Programs?
|
|
We know that veterinary students that graduate with certifications in veterinary rehabilitation and/or acupuncture have more to offer a potential employer. But finances and school schedules can make this additional training very challenging. With this in mind, CRI has made adjustments to our rehabilitation and acupuncture certification programs just for veterinary students.
We encourage veterinary students to take advantage of the 20% discount off the tuition we are currently offering. We are also in discussions with our sponsor companies to develop tuition assistance programs.

During this challenging time when many people are facing temporary unemployment, it is even more important to be generous and help us support those in need.

To make a tax-deductible donation, use the button below to donate to Coral Springs Animal Hospital's charitable fund through the Veterinary Care Charitable Fund.
