St. Philip's Young Adult Ministry Update:
A note from the Rev. Justin C. Hare,
Assistant for Young Adult and College Ministry
|
|
Though forecasts were spotty for most of the week, the Lord gave us a splendid spring Sunday that was perfect for a lowcountry boil for 20-30-somethings on the Parish House Lawn. We had lawn games, craft beer, and delicious food, but all agreed that the most delightful part was enjoying unhurried conversation.
Sundays have been quite different during the pandemic, and not having the normal after-church conversations has been a challenge. To compound the need for connection, the Lord continues to bring more and more newcomers to our church! So we’ve had to adapt, and thus was born the Oyster Roast in December and the Lowcountry Boil in April! In addition, two "pilot" small groups began this spring, both of which helped create, sustain, and nurture relationships even in the pandemic.
If you’ve been unable to join us for these, fear not––much is brewing for young adults at St. Philip's. Our plan is to continue to provide welcoming events like the Roast and the Boil each semester, and I’m praying for even more small groups to launch in the fall. And if you’re looking for something to check out sooner than that, St. Philip’s young adult ministry will be doing Theology on Tap throughout the summer, and we’d love to have you!
If you or a young adult you know has not been invited to join in yet, please send me a quick email. I’d love to connect over coffee and talk about ways to get involved!

"Almighty and everlasting God, let your fatherly hand ever be over these your servants; let your Holy Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of your Word, that they may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
On Wednesday, April 14, the Rt. Rev. Mark J. Lawrence, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina, returned to St. Philip's to preside over a service of Confirmation. We are delighted to welcome the following people to our St. Philip’s family:

Frontier Missions and Our New Missions Partner
by Susan C. Keller, World Missions Committee
|
|
The 10/40 Window is the rectangular area of North Africa, the Middle East and Asia approximately between 10 degrees north and 40 degrees north latitude. The 10/40 Window is often called "The Resistant Belt" and includes the majority of the world's Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists. ––The Joshua Project
There’s been a wonderful development from our World Missions Committee this year. We are adding the frontier missions organization Anglican Frontier Missions (AFM) to our annual giving budget! As part of your giving to St. Philip’s, you are in this partnership as well.
So what is Anglican Frontier Missions? Well, let me start with a few world mission facts:
- There are 7 billion people in the world.
- There are 17,000 ethnolinguistic people groups that make up the 7 billion people.
- Of those 17,000 groups, 7,000 are considered to be out of reach of the gospel of Jesus Christ (commonly referred to as “unreached”).
- These 7,000 unreached groups consist of 3.13 billion people––approximately 40% of the world’s population have no access to the gospel!
What does it mean to be unreached, you might ask? The unreached, known more recently as the “least evangelized" or “frontier people groups,” are groups who essentially have no access to the gospel––no Christian neighbors, no churches, no Bibles, no Christian radio, no Christian books: zero access. Even if they knew to want access, there is none.

Children's Ministry Spring/Summer Newsletter:
Children's Church, Sunday Fun Days, VBS@Home, and More!
|
|
|
In March, we sent out a survey to parents and volunteers to get a sense of how you felt about various options for children's ministry in the spring and summer. Based on these responses and the need to keep children, volunteers and staff safe, we have decided to replace our traditional, large-scale VBS with a variety of smaller, socially distanced events throughout the summer.

Let Us Welcome the Newly Baptized!
|
|
Baptism is not only a sign of profession, and mark of difference, whereby Christian men are discerned from others that be not christened, but it is also a sign of Regeneration or New-Birth, whereby, as by an instrument, they that receive Baptism rightly are grafted into the Church; the promises of the forgiveness of sin, and of our adoption to be the sons of God by the Holy Ghost, are visibly signed and sealed; Faith is confirmed, and Grace increased by virtue of prayer unto God.
––Article XXVII “Of Baptism,” The Book of Common Prayer
Pandemic restrictions have kept our congregation from witnessing baptisms, so we are sharing the happy news here! Let us welcome into Christ’s one holy catholic and apostolic Church these children who were recently baptized:
Alden Rudy Elliot
Fulton Rutledge Elliott
Sons of Van and Henslee Elliott
baptized on April 18 by the Rev. Justin Hare
Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, received them as your own children by adoption, made them members of your holy Church, and raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit, that they may enjoy everlasting salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mere Christianity: Timely Truth for a Hurting World
Wednesdays at 7:15 p.m. on Zoom
|
|
Mere Christianity began as a series of radio talks during the darkest days of World War II in England. Lewis was asked by the BBC to do the talks because so many people were living in fear and anxiety and were feeling that the world was crumbling around them, that "the wheels had come off the bus." Our culture today is beset with many of those same anxieties, albeit for different reasons. Lewis's broadcast talks were then edited by Lewis and published in book form as Mere Christianity. The book is still remarkably fresh today and serves as an encouragement to the believer, a winsome challenge to the doubter, and an effective apologetic for the unbeliever.

Hello, Grace Creel!
Follow St. Philip's Church on Instagram and Facebook!
|
|
|
Last Friday was a very special day in the church office because we had a very special visitor: Grace Creel!
Miss Grace, as some in the office call her, stopped by (sporting her Chuck Taylors, of course) to spend a few minutes with us and drop off gifts and cards for Felicia Lescow and Ben Singleton, who both celebrated birthdays in the past few days.
What a delight it was to hear Grace's sweet voice and see her smiling eyes––how we miss our #1 inSPIRE lady!
We are planning on resuming a printed inSPIRE, though, so we hope to see Grace and all the inSPIRE ladies back in the office soon. The office just isn't the same without their Wednesday morning chatter and laughter floating down the hall as they ready the newsletter envelopes for mailing.
|
|
If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew about Miss Grace's visit. But if you don't, why not click one or both of the links below and give us a follow right now so you can be among the first to hear stories like these?
