Village of Long Grove
Lake County, Tollway Move Support Away from
Proposed Rt. 53 Extension
The Village of Long Grove has officially opposed the extension of Route 53 to Route 120 for several decades, due to environmental concerns, financial impacts as well as the fact that the extension had the real potential to exacerbate current congestion problems instead of solving them. Another reason was that this type of highway extension would diminish the rural character and open space that makes the Village so unique.

Last week, the Illinois Tollway Authority announced that the $25 million Environmental Impact Study (EIS) - touted as an initial phase of this nearly $3 billion proposed project - has been terminated. Just days before this announcement, the Lake County Board also unanimously announced it was moving its support away from the proposed project. Instead, the Lake County Board announced that as part of its future transportation plans, it would remain focused on protecting open space, with an emphasis on improving infrastructure for existing roadways, including the widening of Route 22. The Route 22 improvement has been, and continues to be, supported by the Village of Long Grove as a way to address traffic issues and resulting congestion in our area and throughout Lake County.

RPC Road Project Begins
After months of planning, the Robert Parker Coffin (RPC) Road project, which also includes improvements to the RPC Bridge, began in mid-July. Westbound RPC will be closed during the reconstruction of the road, while eastbound RPC will have periodic lane closures. Signage for work and directions to stores and parking lots is also in place.

The first phase of the project will be the extension of the public watermain down RPC Road. Once completed, all downtown properties will have access to public water; the overall goal is to attract new businesses, including restaurants, to the downtown district.  Other planned improvements include streetlights, benches, ADA accessible sidewalks, new landscaping and storm sewer improvements. As part of this project, the RPC Bridge's timber cover will be replaced, along with painting and abutment repairs. The anticipated date for completion of the RPC project is the end of November, prior to Thanksgiving (weather-permitting). During this project, businesses in downtown Long Grove will remain open and signage will direct shoppers to access points. For more information, please call Long Grove Village Hall at  847-634-9440

Services will not be disrupted. and for properties that have an accessible meter, no action is needed.

Residents or businesses with meters that are not accessible will be contacted by Nicor to schedule an appointment so the device can be installed. For more information, please call Nicor at  855-333-4347 or click here.
