Because Lutherans have been in the wilderness before:
We mark our foreheads with dust. We acknowledge that we die and return to the earth but we are forever marked with the cross of Christ. We tackle tough truths. We travel rocky roads. We stumble at times. There is no need to wander alone. Journey the wilderness with us this Lenten season. We are better (at braving the wild) together.

2020 LENT DEVOTIONAL
Wilder · ness
“state of the wild”
Lent begins in the wilderness. The Spirit guides Jesus into the wilderness where he comes face to face with temptation and struggle. Yet, in his forty days of fasting, resisting, and wandering, Jesus is shaped and formed for ministry. Similarly, through the wilderness of Lent, we are invited to surrender to the wild leadings of the Spirit. We rarely enter the wilderness willingly, but hopefully through our wandering we remember who we are and whose we are. The wilderness can become sacred even if it remains dangerous. There is no wilderness space too harsh or threatening for God’s love. This Lent, we welcome you to the journey.

World Day of Prayer
March 6, 2020
“Rise! Take Your Mat and Walk”
Join Church Women United for this special event on Friday, March 6 at 2:00 PM in the Women’s Ministry Room at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church.
This year, the women of the World Day of Prayer (WDP) Committee of Zimbabwe call us to worship with the words: “Rise! Take your mat and walk” from John 5. We are invited to learn about Zimbabwe’s history and rich culture. The women share their stories of intergenerational wisdom, traditions, and experiences of God’s profound love.
The WDP 2020 program is based on Jesus’ encounter with a person who, although positioned for healing, had not acted upon the opportunities given (John 5:2-9a). Jesus asked, “Do you want to be made well?” You are faced with this life-changing question. What are you going to do? Use this opportunity to reflect with your WDP group, community and ecumenical partners. Prayer and action are what link us together around the globe.
“Rise! Take your mat and walk,” Jesus said. Our sisters from Zimbabwe are taking Jesus’ encounter to be a call to act in love for peace and reconciliation. “The action verbs suggest that we should not be afraid to act on the word of God. God is offering us the steps for personal and social transformation.” This is the time for change!
WDP’s guiding principles affirm that “prayer is rooted in listening to God and to one another.” Through the worship service, we listen to the people of Zimbabwe. They take us to their communities and through their concerns. Their everyday life is woven into their prayers. They invite us to follow prayer with action. WDP’s motto, “Informed prayer leads to prayerful action” affirms that prayer and action are inseparable and that both have immeasurable influence. Let us walk in faith and prayerful action!
