Middle School News
Carnival is this week!

On Friday October 25th, students will enjoy one of the long-standing beloved traditions of Roycemore School- Carnival! On this day, the Upper School students create a Carnival in the gym with all kinds of games and activities for the younger students. They also create a Haunted Maze in the MPR.

That day students will have Humanities and Science Class, then there will be Pumpkin Carving by House groups and a costume contest prior to students getting to enjoy the Carnival.

COSTUMES: Your assistance is requested to help ensure your student makes good choices about their costume. Because we are a school with students as young as 3, there should be no scary costumes, nothing provocative, or inappropriate.

We could use a few parent volunteers from 1:45pm-3pm to help provide supervision during the Carnival. If interested and available, email Adrianne.

SCHOOL WILL END AT 3PM on Friday. Zone will start early that day or you can pick up your child early-- then return at 5pm for the Middle School Potluck social!
Middle School Pot Luck

After your children have enjoyed Carnival on Friday, let them burn off their energy with a little more time with their friends at the Middle School Pot Luck!

The  Roycemore Family Association  (RFA) has planned this evening as a time for our middle school families to get to know each other better while students enjoy MORE time together. Bring your favorite dish. Bring a dessert. Bring a beverage. We will have board games and the gym will be open for your children to run around and play after they eat, while the parents socialize.

Sixth Grade French

Sixth grade French students took to the board to first reflect and then write about their family traditions. Over the past two weeks, the students have learned how to speak and write about their family members and their nationalities, cultural foods and family traditions.

The content comes to life as the students relate what they are learning to their own lives and experiences.
Humanities Highlights!
The fifth and sixth graders worked together to tackle their textbooks. In small groups, they each actively read a section of the chapter and worked together to summarize and analyze it. Each group contributed their notes to the class slideshow.
The seventh and eighth graders have been studying the Cold War. This week, they reviewed the Chinese Cultural Revolution, which many of them were exposed to by reading the memoir  Red Scarf Girl  in Sixth Grade. They then traveled to China with President Nixon using primary source documentary footage from the Nixon presidential library.

Stay tuned for next week, when a surprise guest speaker comes for a visit.
Homeroom & Advisory this past week

PRIORITIES
“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.” Stephen Covey, Author, Educator

During Homeroom and Advisory this past week Middle School students talked about priorities, stress, and finding a healthy balance for themselves. Through conversations with their classmates they learned about different ways they each de-stress when needed. They also learned what a "priority" is and why it is important to create priorities for themselves.

During Advisory on Thursday, they watched this video and then discussed what ideas for de-stressing they learned about in the video, were techniques that worked for them.
Seeking Mentors for P3!

Our Middle School personal passion projects (P3) are off to a great start! This year, all middle schoolers are connecting with a real-world problem associated with their own passion and interests, then using the Design Thinking process to design solutions to their chosen problem. We are looking for mentors to help our Middle School students with these projects. We are in need of experts from ALL fields to serve as mentors, with a particular need in the following areas: animal welfare, environmental action, community service, entrepreneurship, and technology. If you know of anyone who would like to work with a middle schooler, please ask them to fill out this form:  https://goo.gl/forms/f1IOQylI39cIkNnG2

Students have been divided in groups based on their interests. Each group is supported by two members of the faculty. The groups are:

  • Home/Self: those who want to improve something for themselves or their family
  • School: those who want to improve something at Roycemore
  • Community: those who want to improve something in their community
  • Animals: those who want to help animals (could be a subset of the Community group)
  • World: those who want to do things to help our planet (particularly global warming)

A letter was sent home a few days ago about P3 and where we need your assistance. Please read and respond to Beth Shutters. Thank you for your support!
