His work in this area led him to a summer internship with the Begun Center where he assists with research on a variety of topics related to violence prevention, and assists with the dissemination of original research from the Center.

How Health Care Practitioners Can Help Prevent Suicide: New Book from Jane Timmons-Mitchell
Suicide prevention shouldn’t be limited to hotlines and therapy sessions. In addition, caregivers in hospitals and primary-care offices should be trained to identify suicide warning signs. That’s according to Jane Timmons-Mitchell, PhD, a senior research associate with the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education.

Timmons-Mitchell said that doctors’ offices and emergency departments make sense for suicide prevention. After all, of those who die by suicide, 77 percent visited primary-care offices and emergency departments within the year before their deaths, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Congratulations to research assistant Maggie McGuire, who received the "25 Under 35" Award from St. Joseph Academy. Here is what they had to say:

"Aiding someone who experienced a crisis while showing empathy and providing support is no easy task, yet that’s exactly what Maggie does on a daily basis. She devotes herself tirelessly to empathetic justice, instilled in her by her education from Saint Joseph Academy. Maggie applies her background as an advocate in the non-profit sector. She uses her skills to process sensitive data, inform the public about sexual assault and domestic violence, and secure the funding and resources to ensure that the most vulnerable and marginalized populations see justice. Maggie is currently pursuing a graduate degree in public health while working full- time, in order to enhance her ability to serve populations that might otherwise go unnoticed."

In 1998, our work began at the Institute for the Study and Prevention of Violence at Kent State University.

In 2000, similar work also began at Case Western Reserve University at the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education in the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences.

In 2011, many researchers from ISPV moved to the Begun Center, and the center began to thrive at Case Western Reserve University.

In 2018, we will recognize a combined 20 years of violence prevention .

Stay tuned for more information on events to learn about and help us honor our work !
