The Columbia Summit on Indian Economy


The Consulate General of India, New York in association with Deepak & Neera Raj Center on Indian Economic Policies had organised a two day summit at Columbia University entitled ‘Columbia Summit on Indian Economy’ of policy practitioners, academicians, future policy leaders media and the Indian Diaspora, aimed to facilitate networking with distinguished experts from government, corporate sector, multilateral and academia.
Some of the distinguished speakers at the conference include: i) Prof. Arvind Panagariya, Former Vice Chairman, Niti Aayog, Sajjid Chinoy, Devashish Mitra, Viral Acharya (Former Dy. Governor, RBI, Prof. Of NYU), Jay Pada, National Spokesperson, BJP and Former Member of Parliament. The topics included Growth with Stabillity, Banking Sector, Current Crisis and Future Course, Foreign Investment as a Development Tool, Goods & Services Taxes in India, The State and the Market in Education Provision, India’s FTA and Future Course of Trade Policy.

New India Lecture Series at the Consulate

A conversation on 'Jammu, Kashmir, & Ladakh - The Way Ahead' was organised as a part of the New India Lecture Series Season II at the Consulate on November 04, 2019. Ms. Aarti Tikoo Singh Journalist, Political Analyst and an Editor at The Times of India was the keynote speaker of the event. During the conversation with Mr. Ankit Panda, Senior Editor at The Diplomat who was the moderator of the event, she discussed various issues on the future of Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh.

Launch of the North East New York Regional Chapter of the Indian American International Chamber of Commerce (IAICC) at the Consulate


US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai was the keynote speaker at the launch of the North East New York Regional Chapter of the Indian American International Chamber of Commerce (IAICC) held at the Consulate on November 6, 2019. IAICC was formed in 1989 as an umbrella organisation that provides a sustainable platform and leadership forum for entrepreneurs, professionals, businesses and governments in the United States and India to interact, exchange and promote economic development. Mr. Pai lauded the significant contributions made by members of the community across sectors in the US, including finance, technology, education, sports, art and culture. Mr. K V Kumar, President & CEO, IAICC, Dr. Ravishankar Bhooplapur, Glenn Falcao, Mr. Appen Menon, Dr. Sudhir M. Parikh, Mr. Satish P. Shah along with other prominent members of IAICC were also present during the event.

Visit of Hon’ble Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce, Industry & Railways at the Consulate


Following Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the United States in September and the Government of India’s recently slate of economic reforms and liberalization of FDI regimes, the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC), Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with the Consulate General of India organised the Investors meet in New York on November 14, 2019 with the Hon’ble Minister of Commerce, Industry & Railways who discussed the recent developments and ways to deepen bilateral trade and investment and how to remove bottlenecks to investment. Hon’ble Minister also discussed the ongoing U.S.-India trade negotiations.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal holds trade talks with USTR Lighthizer

Minister Goyal and USTR Lighthizer met in Washington, DC this week to discuss the details and contours of a trade package. Building on the momentum between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, the meeting was extremely positive and both sides have agreed to continue working on their joint goals for growing bilateral economic cooperation. 
Moving on from DC, Minister Goyal met USISPF members in New York, discussing India's progress on the economic front and the larger US-India relationship.

USISPF to lead delegation on Food and Agriculture

On November 18-19, 2019, USISPF will lead a Sustainable Food and Agriculture mission to New Delhi to meet with Government of India officials around the issues of reducing food waste, improving farmer welfare, and sharing best practices and technology from the U.S. The mission emerged as a result of a 2017 visit with India’s Ministry of Food Processing, Harsimraut Kaur Badal, who explained to many of the U.S. companies that 40% of food is wasted in India, demonstrating a gap in the supply chain that prevents crops from meeting their potential.

An Interactive Session in association with the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (FeTNA) was organised in honor of Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru O. Panneerselvam at the Consulate on November 16, 2019 to promote investments in the State of Tamil Nadu.

Consul General interacted with the senior level executives of Central Public Sector Enterprises (at the level of CEOs, Directors and Executive Directors) during their visit to USA. The visit was part of the Advanced Global Leadership Program (AGLP-2019), which is being conducted by Indian institute of Management Calcutta in collaboration with Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) for the past eight years.

Consulate General of India, New York partnered with FIA (Federation of Indian Association in NY-NJ-CT) to organise the inaugural Princeton India Business Conclave in Princeton. The Conclave featured insightful and incisive discussions on India growth story.








India sent over 2 lakh students to US in 2018-19; second highest after China

As reported by USISPF, India sent more than 202,000 students to the US in 2018-19, the second largest after China which for the tenth consecutive year remained the largest source of foreign students in America, according to a report released on Monday. The '2019 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange' said the number of foreign students in the US set an all-time high in the 2018/19 academic year.
Pharma exports to US register second-highest growth in last 5 years

As reported by USISPF, exports of the drugs and pharmaceuticals to the US grew sharply by 23.8% to $3.42 billion during the first six months of the FY 19/20. This was the second-highest export growth to the country during April-September 2019 in the past five years. Improvement in exports to the US drove the growth in overall exports, although it was around 2% points lower than the growth registered in the previous fiscal period
