Greetings from Our
President

|
Sheilah Abramson-Miles
WRJ Central District President
Dear WRJ Central District Sisters,
Where has the time gone? I began this month by attending the WRJ Board Webinar. I am very excited to serve on the Social Justice Conference Grant Task Force. Hillary Handwerger is the leader of this committee.
Our Central District Biennial Convention is just around the corner. Everyone has been working so hard to make this a great event, especially Alison Auerbach. I have been in touch with Beth Lande and Beth Goldstein about the exciting awards that Central District will be presenting. As you will read further, we have registration on line and will be accepting PayPal for YES Fund auction items. A special thank you goes to Alison Auerbach, Laurie Blinder, Liz McOsker, Lisa Singer, Pamela Feldman-Hill , Hillary Handwerger and the local convention committee, Suzanne Singerman, Janice Bilchik, and Sharon Priesand
. Thanks also to
Sandy Adland and Marilyn Goldfein for a fantastic job on Nominating Committee.
On June 15th, I was honored to deliver the D'var Torah to Temple Beth Shalom in Hudson Ohio for their Sisterhood Shabbat. My topic was the revolutionary history of WRJ.
Let's all register for convention. I look forward to seeing you all in a couple of months..
Respectfully submitted,
Sheilah Abramson-Miles
WRJ Central District President

Why Should You attend the
Central District Convention?
|
What activity provides you the opportunity to create a caring community, become re-energized both personally and spiritually, attend meaningful workshops and connect with women from within the Central District? Answer: your attendance at the WRJ Central District Convention to be held in Beachwood, Ohio from November 9-11, 2018.
You will enjoy all of the above listed activities plus so much more. My experiences at these conventions have enriched my life, allowed me to make new life-long friends as well as made me a better Sisterhood member and leader. Your attending the convention will give you the opportunity to interact with your peers, to attend informative workshops and to participate in discussions led by WRJ Leadership, who are outstanding and distinguished speakers . These workshops and discussions are so relevant to your Sisterhood. The opportunity to celebrate Shabbat in a beautiful setting while praying with your peers is very inspirational. The conventions are exciting and informative and I return home invigorated and anxious to share my experiences with my Temple and Sisterhood. I am looking forward to my time in Beachwood and hope to meet many of you as we share this experience together.

Dear WRJ Central District leaders,
We invite you to think about joining the North American Board of WRJ. Nominations and applications will be "live" very soon, and open through October. This is YOUR opportunity to join women from North America and around the world to form policy, create programming, add your voice in advocacy, and develop life-long friendships while doing the important work of WRJ.
Please contact Pamela Feldman-Hill or Marci Delson if you have questions about the process, roles, responsibilities, or time commitments. We would love to talk to you about what it's like to be part of WRJ at this level. For both of us, this has been an incredibly fulfilling and meaningful aspect of our WRJ journey. Keep your eyes peeled for links to the applications, which will be on our Central District Facebook page, as well as in emails which will be forthcoming from WRJ.

Central District Book Club
|
|
|
Hello Bookgroupies,
We have had three very interesting books to read and review so far. Our most recent discussion, on August 22, proved that we really do enjoy historical fiction. If you haven't read "Weight of Ink" by Rachel Kadish, you should give it a try.
The next book for our group will be "A Gentleman in Moscow" by Amor Towles. The Zoom Book Discussion will be on December 5, 2018 at 7:30 pm.
"A Gentleman in Moscow" is the 30-year saga of the Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, who is placed under house arrest inside the Metropol Hotel in Moscow in 1922 when the Bolsheviks spare him from death or Siberia because of his 1913 revolutionary poem written in university. The relationships he forms with staff and guests, his handling of twists of fate, his moral rectitude and his perseverance to go on in the face of his lifelong imprisonment for being a Former Person make for a compelling tale, beautifully written.
If you want to join the "Club", contact Hillary Handwerger at
[email protected] and we will be sure you get notified of the meeting. Zoom meetings are fun because they are face to face over the internet, but you can also join by just using your phone.

Sisterhood Weekend at Temple Israel in Akron, Ohio
By Audrey Baker, President and Carol Friedman, Immediate Past President
Temple Israel hosted Leslie Brier, WRJ United Nations Representative, for Sisterhood Weekend, June 29 - 30, 2018.
Our weekend began with our Sisterhood Shabbat Service. Cantor Kathy Fromson introduced Limdu Heitev to the congregation. Following a congregational dinner, Leslie spoke about her work with the United Nations. At the UN she represents both Women of Reform Judaism, and the World Union for Progressive Judaism which allows her a voice at the UN. Leslie serves on the North American Board of the World Union for Progressive Judaism.
Saturday morning Leslie joined Rabbi Josh Brown for Torah Study. Sisterhood provided a brunch where Leslie discussed the two resolutions passed by the WRJ Board at the Fried Leadership Conference this past March. The subjects of the resolutions are (1) Child Marriage, and (2) Affordable Housing. Leslie and Rabbi Brown talked about the importance of passing resolutions and how WRJ supports policies in many areas such as social advocacy, civil rights, and economic justice.
Later that evening a barbecue and Havdalah service was held at the home of Lisa and Rick Singer. During the evening Leslie and the guests had a lively question and discussion session.
All three events were very well attended by Sisterhood and congregational members.
Rabbi Josh Brown and Leslie Brier

Highlight your sisterhood on our Central District Website,
Facebook or in Isha L'Isha
As we start yet another new year, this is a reminder that you have the opportunity to shine a light on your sisterhood and its programs. You can send flyers about your programs to Hillary at
[email protected]
and they will get posted on Facebook. You can also share your successful programs on Isha L'Isha with articles and pictures.
If it's an Area Day, we will promote it on our website. Don't forget to include WRJ Central in your advertising. Have a great 2018-2019.

REMINDER: WRJ Central District now has Zoom
Zoom is a high quality video web conferencing and webinar software. The program can be used in different scenarios: virtual collaboration, online training sessions, online discussions --like book groups (We'll be using Zoom for our Book Group!).
Zoom allows you to chat, share files, and invite contacts to a meeting - all on your Zoom client for PC, Mac, Android and BlackBerry.
Zoom meetings are easy to join and participate in. WRJ Central now has the capability to have as many as 50 participants at a time in the "meeting". We selected Zoom because it gives us the ability to see each other while we talk, making for a more personal experience and assuring that we know and recognize each other when we get to visit at WRJ Central events.
The designated host for the meeting will send all participants an email that contains information that will let you join the "meeting". The participants will need to download and install the Zoom application. Once you've done that, you are ready to go-for this and future meetings.
What You Will Need:
- Each meeting has a unique 9, 10, or 11-digit number called a Meeting ID that will be required to join a Zoom meeting
- If you are joining via telephone, you will need the teleconferencing number provided in the invite.
To learn how easy it is to join a meeting, check out this video:

Please submit articles for the next issue of Isha L'Isha
