Hello, Dade County!
We learned the true meaning of
CHARACTER this past week in the living example of
Chief Deputy Tommy Bradford. Dade County wishes this SuperHero, a former DCS School Resource Officer, well as he recovers from multiple injuries sustained while protecting our students and community. We are focusing on
KNOWLEDGE in our Character Education Plan this month. Because of Chief Deputy Bradford's knowledge and character, he is a role model for us all. The Dade County community is displaying gratitude for his servant leadership and sacrifice through myriad opportunities to thank him for his unselfish service to Dade County.
Check out our
Character Ed Plan on our website and talk about these important words and themes with your students. This year we added quotes from our very own Dade County Young Authors. This week, quotes from Sidney Jones, Anna Ballard, Kaitlyn Hedden, Karen Zheng and Alannah Gray will be featured. See Kaitlyn's quote below:

Come out and support the
Lady Wolverines Softball Team Monday and Tuesday as we play at Home starting at 5:30 p.m. The
Board of Education has a work session on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. and DMS is hosting a Back to School Bash from 3:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Friday, August 17th. There will be inflatables, games, a climbing wall and more on the DMS Soccer Field. Admission is $10 and includes all activities. Dunk tank and all concession items will be $1.
Check out our
Fine Arts Department website. Our students' art will be displayed at the Hunter Art Museum this fall. Department Chair Gabrielle Haston and I were talking about the benefits of music/art and she shared research such as:
- On SAT tests for 2006, music students scored an average of 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 43 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework or experience in the arts.
- Schools that have music programs have significantly higher graduation rates than those without programs (90.2% as compared to 72.9%). Harris Interactive Poll of high school principals, 2006.
- A recent Rockefeller Foundation Study found that music majors have the highest rate of admittance to medical school, followed by biochemistry and the humanities.
- The American Music Conference reports that music makers are more likely to go on to college and other higher education than those who are not involved in music...52% more likely!
- A report released by the Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse found that "Secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances" (Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana or any illicit drug).
Speaking of music....I can't wait to see the halftime show this year with tunes from
