8/7/18 Note about the Service Line Warranties of America Letter received by many residents of the Village:

If you have received a letter from Service Line Warranties of America regarding insuring your water service line, please be aware that this is not a Village-sanctioned communication. The Village of Whitefish Bay cannot recommend any particular coverage and pursuing this coverage is at your own discretion and risk. Please note that out of the Village's 4,500 water service lines, the Village averages 20 leaks per year. If the leak is on the Village's side, we repair our portion at no cost to you. There are informational resources regarding water services on our website here:

(Note, this company also sent out letters targeting residents in February, 2018, which also were not Village-sanctioned.)

New  Automated Residential Refuse and Recycling Collection Program
STARTS ON MONDAY, AUGUST 20

Your cart is being delivered this week!

Important Dates:
  • If you are a resident in a 1-3-unit dwelling in the Village, you should have received a  postcard in the mail the week of July 30 letting you know about these key dates. If not, please call or click here to view.
  • Your New Refuse Cart will be delivered sometime between today,  Monday, August 13, and Saturday, August 18.
  • The New Collection Program will begin Monday, August 20.
  • The Village will pick up old, unwanted, rinsed refuse cans from your parkway for free starting at 7:00am on the following date: Pickup is Saturday, September 8 for residents north of or on Henry Clay Street, and Saturday, September 15 for residents south of Henry Clay Street. Please have cans rinsed and out by 7:00am for pickup. Bins or cans left out that day will be removed by the Village.
  • If you are having a block party the day of cart delivery or old cart/can pickup, we will make every effort to service your block prior to the barricading of your street. Otherwise, for old can pickup we will be collecting them outside the barricade of your street. For new cart delivery, if your block delivery falls on that Friday, Aug. 18, we will work with you to ensure delivery before barricades go up. Please call Jenny Heyden for more information on this 414-962-6690 ext. 495.
  • For the details and a timeline of this program and the history of public meetings on this program, see the website page dedicated to the program here: www.wfbvillage.org/trashrecycle

Collection Schedule Changes  Monday, August 20:
  • Refuse will continue to be picked up weekly in the new gray refuse cart provided.
  • Recycling will now be collected every other week in the same blue cart you own.
  • Your Refuse collection and Recycling day of the week will not change and are the same. See the map for your A or B week recycling collection schedule (pictured below), and the calendar for dates of A or B pickup.
  • All A Routes will begin recycling collection the Week of August 20. All B Routes will begin collection the Week of August 27.
  • Because this new schedule will cause a few homes to experience a one-time delay in recycling pickup, the routes formerly known as Week 3 and Week 4  Recycling may put extra recycling out next to the containers free of charge just for the first pickup of the new system. All household refuse must be containerized, however. Details below:
    1. Week of August 20, the first A week, residents can put out recycling outside of the cart, thus violating the new rule, and we will pick it up free of charge. Refuse must be containerized inside the cart for household waste.
    2. Week of August 27, the first B week, residents can put out recycling outside of the cart, thus violating the new rule, and we will pick it up free of charge. Refuse must be containerized inside the cart for household waste.
    3. All Customers: Week of  September 3 (A week), there is NO pickup on Mon., Sept. 3, due to Labor Day, so  recycling and garbage pickup will be on Tues., Sept. 4, for both Mon. and Tues.
    4. Tuesday, Sept. 4 will be the first day of Containerized Automated collection for both recycling and refuse.
    5. There is no change to the yard waste and chipper schedules or process.

Program Summary of Refuse and Recycling Collection Guidelines:
  • Only Village Carts for Refuse and Recycling may be used for collection.
  • Required cart placement is on the parkway, driveway apron or outside alley garage
  • Face the lid arrows towards the street and the handle toward the house
  • Carts should be placed at least three feet apart from each other, and a maximum of three feet from the street
  • All household waste must be put inside carts for collection
  • All recycling goes in the blue recycling cart and the lid must close. The small recycling bins are no longer acceptable for Recycling pickup.
  • All refuse goes in the new gray refuse cart and lid must close.
  • Additional carts (refuse and recycling) are available for sale for $75 each. Pay in person or by mail, call 414-962-6690 ext. 495 or email j.heyden@wfbvillage.org to order.

Yard Waste Pickup

Yard Waste Pickup continues. There will be no program changes to yard waste or chipping collection. All yard waste must be containerized, which means in paper yard waste bags OR reusable hard plastic cans or carts (please leave lid off so collectors know it is not refuse).

No grass clippings are allowed in Yard Waste, Refuse or Recycling, per the DNR, due to toxicity. Ordinance 10.04(3)(d)

The clippings, when left in place after cutting the grass, will provide a ready source of fertilizer while helping the soil retain water which promotes root growth and a healthy lawn. The simple practice of leaving clippings on the lawn after mowing is called "grasscycling."

Yard waste containers - must weigh 50 pounds or less, and be paper bags or hard plastic containers - no plastic bags.

Per Whitefish Bay Ordinance 7.02(1), no yard waste or clippings should ever be placed outside of private property, such as on the street, gutter or near sewer drains. Please advise any lawn care provider that blowing or brushing waste into the street is a ticketable offense. Lawn care providers often blow waste into the street or other property. This is against Village Ordinance. Mulching mowers and redistributed grass clippings are recommended.

Yard waste continues Mondays/Tuesdays starting on north end of Village ( weekly

Chipper continues Wednesdays/Thursdays starting on north end of Village ( bi-weekly).

Tre e Inventory is Underway:
Wachtel Tree Science continues street tree inventory on all of the approximately 8,600 street trees throughout the entire Village. There will be two Wachtel employees inspecting/inventorying our street trees during this time period. They will both have reflective safety vests on and will be driving company vehicles with the Wachtel Tree Science and Service logos on them.
-----
Completed: Emerald Ash Borer Tree Replacement and Ash Tree Treatment
  1. Approximately 130 trees were planted in the Village of Whitefish Bay.
  2. Approximately 850 ash trees were treated throughout the Village.

Hydrant Flushing Continues!
The upcoming area that will be flushed includes Silver Spring Drive heading south, Santa Monica Boulevard heading east all the way up to and including Lake Dive and to the south village limits. Flushing will begin in the northwestern part of that area, heading in a southeastern direction.  Completion of the flushing project should occur in mid -July. Portable signs will be posted in the general area where the flushing is occurring. Residents may notice cloudy water at times and may experience low water pressure.  If cloudy water occurs please run your water for a period of time until the water clears; this is only a temporary condition if it occurs.
-----
2018 Sidewalk Improvement Program

The mission of the Program is to sustain infrastructure longevity and improve safety. The Program will run from March to September, 2018, and will cover sidewalk in the southwest area of the Village. There is no charge to residents for this work.

Schedule:
March and April: Sidewalks marked for identification
June - September: Sidewalk Improvement

As in the past, the 2018 Project will involve the replacement of problematic & deteriorated sidewalks, carriage walks, and curbs within the Village Right of Way. As the Village policy states, "All sidewalk improvements shall be made in order to eliminate trip hazards as first priority. Efforts shall be made where appropriate to improve drainage. Identified drainage problems shall be addressed as directed specifically by the Village Engineering Staff." This year, Forward Construction has been awarded the contract.

A number of factors are used to determine if a sidewalk block is to be replaced. They include, but are not limited to, deteriorated joints, uneven squares (offsets greater than ¾"), transverse cracks, longitudinal cracks, holes, spalled surfaces, sunken slabs, back pitched slabs, graylining, open aggregate, and/or gaps greater than ¾".

Currently, sidewalk in the southwest corner of the Village is being marked for sidewalk improvements.  A white circle indicates the sidewalk block will be replaced. "L" shaped marks indicate that the raised portion of the sidewalk will be ground down to minimize tripping hazards. A white line parallel to a joint abutting a white circle indicates a saw cut.

Thank you for your patience while this effort is in process.

Enjoy the last, lazy days of summer at the Sounds of Summer on Saturday, August 18. The evening kicks off at 5:00 on Silver Spring Drive with Rocket Cat who skillfully blends the band members backgrounds in alternative, progressive and hard rock as well as power pop. Trapper Schoepp takes the stage at 7:00. Trapper is a young man who's befriended a strange and diverse cast of characters during his 27 years. That small army of rogues and rebels, drifters and dreamers, soldiers and schemers populate his songs, their tragedies and comedies, their lives and deaths recalled in his finely etched musical vignettes. Then dance the night away starting at 8:30 with Radio Radio, a band of top musicians playing songs no other band is covering, in a way that makes you feel you are seeing and hearing the real thing live for the first time.
