August 24, 2018
I'm excited to welcome you back to Bellaire for the 2018-19 school year.  I'm looking forward to a terrific year and I wanted to pass along a few updates regarding our campus site and the 2018 Bond Project.  The start of school will bring some new challenges as we all adjust how we access our school.

BEFORE SCHOOL
  • For the 1st week of school there will be NO access to a Student Parking Lot.  The senior lot will be closed as the bond project finishes up the new temporary lot at Maple & Ferris (former location of the senior lot and baseball field).  We will announce the opening of the Senior Lot once the lottery occurs and the new temporary lot is completed. Seniors can sign up for the lottery here: https://form.jotform.com/82132453984965
  • The new bell schedule to move to first period will ring at 8:30am and students must be in 1st period by 8:40am.
  • The doors to Bellaire will open at 7:30am and students may enter via doors along both S Rice and Maple.
  • Traffic will be tough the first week.  With all secondary schools beginning at the same time, I am not sure how that may impact traffic patterns across the city.  Please plan to arrive early so that your son/daughter isn't stressed about being on time.
  • Maple St continues to operate as One Way from S Rice toward Ferris (East to West).
  • Weather permitting it is not a bad plan to drop your child off a block or so away as it is not imperative for you to drive them to the front door of High School.

DURING SCHOOL
  • Parking will be tough for any visitors to campus.  Please mind all signage along the streets in terms of allowable parking.  We are not responsible for any tickets or towing that may occur.
  • The parking lot at Maple & Ferris is only for Bellaire faculty/staff.
  • Visitors will approach the secured doors on the right side of the Maple Street Circle Drive to be buzzed in to the main office or attendance office.

AFTER SCHOOL
  • Our new dismissal time is 4:00pm.  HISD busses will continue to load along S Rice.
  • There will be lots of traffic around Bellaire HS from approximately 4:00pm - 4:20pm.
  • Traffic that moves down Maple will not be allowed to turn right or left on Ferris.  Instead all traffic on Maple will be directed toward Chimney Rock.
  • I would encourage you to set up a meeting spot after most traffic has left (4:15 or later).

The change in times, parking, and traffic patterns will bring a new level of excitement to Bellaire HS.  Working together we will manage our way through it. There is lots my team will learn these first few days of school.  And I anticipate some adjustments will need to be made. I commit to do our best to communicate those to you in a manner that minimizes stress or anxiety.  Please know that the most critical aspect of your child's experience has not changed. Strong teaching and learning will continue throughout 5100 Maple and our commitment to make your kids smarter and stronger everyday remains the same.

If you have any questions then please feel free to reach out to me directly.

Thanks,
Michael McDonough

Advocacy Room Assignments
All students report to their Advocacy Room assignment. A list of room assignments can be accessed here
Bell Schedule 2018-2019
In response to the HISD standardized start and end times for all schools, the Bellaire SDMC considered and approved the bell schedule shown above.  Nearly all students will have classes 1st-7th period as only a few classes are offered at zero period.  The schedule above will be used nearly everyday and any exceptions will be published as appropriate.  You will note in the middle of the day a block of time called Cardinal Hour.  This time slot will be where students eat lunch, attend clubs, visit tutorials, and simply take care of any needs (including simply recharging with friends).  There is a short bell that will ring in the middle signifying that we are moving from Red Block to White Block.  This organizational piece will help our students plan their time as some tutorials may be at Red Block while a club meeting could be at White Block.  We still have a single lunch period so that has not changed.  There will be adjustment for us all as we support our students and faculty/staff at the beginning of this school year.  We appreciate your support.

Freshman Dance
The doors to the dance will open at 8:00pm and the dance will end at 10:00pm.  Students should be picked up promptly.  Crew leaders will be here to welcome students, dance and have fun with our freshman. Don't miss this opportunity to connect with new and old friends!
Bus Transportation
All Bellaire students who qualify for transportation on an HISD  school bus need to request transportation by clicking here Students are assigned bus stops based off their address in Chancery. We do not allow students to switch routes.

All students riding an HISD bus to or from school must obtain a Bus Pass. Students should come to the Magnet Office (located in the library) during Cardinal Hour the second week of school to get a Bus Pass. If you have further questions you may call 713-295-3704.

At the beginning of the year  students can ride their bus without a pass with no issues. Once bus passes have been issued students will need to present them to the driver to ride the bus.   For more information on transportation click here

Schedules
Your official schedule will be distributed during advocacy on the first day of school. This schedule may be different from the draft schedule you picked up at student check-in. You must follow the schedule you receive on the first day of school.

If you find an error such as a missing period or you have a double period, you should report to the counselor's office only at that period.

Course Changes
If you need a schedule change, you must submit a schedule change form to the counselor's office. The forms are located online or in the counselor's office. The last day to submit a schedule change is 9/18/18. Click here for a Course Change Request Form

There will be no level changes made the first three weeks of school with the following exceptions:
  • You are a new student to Bellaire,
  • You didn't choose the level that was placed on your schedule
  • You need to move up a level.

Level changes for all other students will begin on 9/19/18 and end on 10/5/18.

The counselor's office is open during Cardinal Hour and after school until 4:30. Please note that Counselors will be registering new students and will process schedule changes as quickly as possible.

Not sure who your counselor is? Check here.
Parent Volunteers are Needed First Day of School
We need volunteers the first day of school at 9:45am. You will help us collect attendance cards throughout the campus.  It's a great way to learn your way around the school and get your exercise for the day! If you can volunteer please sign up here!   (The time commitment will be between two and two and half hours.)

Volunteers should meet in the library.  Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes as you will be walking the building.
Laptop Pick-Up

Students that did not take advantage of the check-in times offered before the start of school will need the following information to pick up their laptop .   You can now take care of paying for your laptop online! Click here  to pay your $25 laptop fee.
Please make sure you have:
1.        Laptop Agreement form filled out (signed by parent and student)
2.       $25 CASH or SchoolPay receipt
3.       Student ID

During Cardinal Hour:
Laptop forms and payments will be accepted in front of Room 220 and a receipt card will be given to the student (HOLD ONTO THIS CARD)

After school:
Students who have paid the fee will present the receipt card to pick up their laptop, case, strap and charger from Room 220.

Please note that there are around 1700 students that will be completing this process, so lines will be longer as a result.  We will do everything in our power to keep the lines moving smoothly.  Once the laptop is picked up, students must log in on campus the first time they use the computer.
Textbook Distribution
Freshman Families
The HISD PowerUp initiative has most courses using electronic textbooks. The only books that will be issued to 9th grade students are: Pre AP Geography, Speech, Health, Russian (level 1 or 2 only), Arabic and Italian. If your student is enrolled in pre-AP Chemistry instead of Biology they will need that textbook as well. Please be aware that to pick up books your student will need both a paper copy of their schedule and their student ID. When in doubt it never hurts to ask the book room staff or your teacher.
