"Being a Good Ally"
Nick Wilbourn
August 2, 2020
10:45 a.m.

What does it mean to be a good ally? How can we best support our friends and loved ones in marginalized communities working on the front lines of social justice movements? UUCH member and PFLAG Huntsville chapter president Nick Wilbourn will explore these questions in the context of our current world and our Unitarian Universalist living tradition.

This Sunday in Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE)

LEGOs and New Friends!

Every other Sunday this summer, we will use a UU LEGO curriculum to "piece together" our six UU sources. Families, join us this Sunday from 3-4 p.m. to build a better understanding of "Jewish and Christian teachings." Meeting links will be emailed to registered families. More details about our summer schedule can be found on our CYRE Facebook page and via email.

In addition to traditional R.E., on Sunday mornings during August at 9 a.m., there will be an opportunity for kids ages 4-12 to join an R.E.-style Zoom call with fellow UU kids from around the country. These calls will last around 25 minutes and feature stories, lessons, and activities. This is a great way for your kids to meet UUs from beyond our Huntsville bubble. More information will be emailed to families.

If you are interested in joining us but you're not registered in the CYRE program, send an email to DRE Erin Reid . You can also click here to register your children and youth. We'd love to include you in our joyful and welcoming community of all ages.

Sincerely, Harper Goodman
Children's and Youth Religious Education Assistant

New Book Discussion Coming in August

Have you ever heard the joke about the woman who cut the end off of the ham and threw it away?  When questioned about it she said, "That's what my mother did."  When she questioned her grandmother she said, "Oh, my pot was too short for a full sized ham!"

Patterns of beliefs and behaviors are passed down from parent to child generation after generation. Is it possible that the adaptive behaviors from the trauma of 300+ years of slavery, black codes, and Jim Crow are still be being taught to the descendants of formerly enslaved Americans? This is the question Dr. Joy DeGruy set out to answer for herself. Armed with 3 advanced degrees, experience teaching at Portland State University, and several trips to study behavior in Africa, she has named the phenomenon she observes in African descendants living in the Americas as "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome."

Join us for a book study of her book, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing.  We will meet via Zoom on two Thursdays, August 13 and 20, at 6:30 p.m.  Facilitators will be Summer Peters and Sally Locklear

Adult RE has a few copies of the book available. If you'd like to borrow one,  let us know.  You are welcome to join in the discussion even if you have not read the book. If interested in attending, please email to register, and we will send you the Zoom link.

To give a plate offering to UUCH from your mobile device, text the amount (without dollar sign) to 833-559-0257, and follow the instructions.

Like our other online and mobile giving options, this is through Vanco, is secure, and has a good option for "plate" donations.

Text giving is by debit or credit card only. To give from your bank account, you can still use the UUCH website or the GivePlus+ mobile app.

Property Report

While the church building has been closed to our usual social gatherings (though stocking the food pantry is continuing, as well as caring for the vegetable garden, and some members are meeting on the front lawn on a regular basis), ongoing maintenance is needed to ensure that the building will be usable when it is safe to do so again. So, the Property Committee has been active during the past few months ensuring that needed maintenance is performed, outside and inside.

If you have been by the church lately, you may have noticed that a couple of pine trees (that were either dying or leaning ominously toward the building) have been removed. Shrubs and small trees that were growing too close to the building or were otherwise undesired have also been removed or trimmed. As previously reported, some oak and maple trees have been newly planted in the area between the road and the parking lot. Also, a rain barrel has been installed next to the RE wing, to collect rainwater for watering the flowers and herbs planted next to the parking lot, as well as the new trees.

Inside, the floors in the Fellowship Hall and some of the RE wing have been stripped and re-waxed, and the rest of the floors in the RE wing will be re-waxed over the next few months.

Typically we have a Property Work/Fun Day in the spring and fall, when volunteers can help with some basic maintenance activities. Since the pandemic began, we have not held that event, but there is a growing list of tasks that volunteers could safely perform, such as cleaning the sign by the road or cleaning the ceiling of the covered walkway or cleaning the courtyard (that's a lot of cleaning, I know!), and inside there are some light fixtures that need new bulbs and some repainting needed.

With the coming of our new minister, Rev. Jaimie, it would be great to have the church be as welcoming (and clean) as possible. Also toward that end, the minister's office will be repainted prior to her arrival.
While the building is important, the church is actually the members and friends who support it and participate in its care. If you can help with any of the tasks mentioned (or with others TBD), please let me know. We will schedule a time when the activities can be performed with suitable precautions.

Calling All Keyholders!

In an effort to account for the keys to the church, we ask that you Board members, Council members, and other church members with UUCH keys please notify Office Administrator Holly Hinkle of your key number(s) and what door(s) they unlock.

If you have given this to the office in the last 2-3 weeks, there is no need to send it again.

Thank you for your assistance!

Our Little Food Pantry Needs You
Our outdoor food pantry is being heavily used, with an estimated 12 visitors per day, both families and homeless individuals. YOU can help keep it stocked by signing up on the SignUp Genius.

The weather is often spoiling the squash and cucumbers and solutions are being considered.  In the meantime, it is best not to leave them in the pantry unless they are placed in zip lock bags so that they do not leak if spoiling.

The January 2020 homeless count was 155 not in shelters, with the total being 561, the highest since 2013. They are asking for sun block, bug spray, and wipes.

We also had a request for dog food this week.  This should be placed in a zip lock bag and labeled.

Current requested items:
  • sunblock
  • bug spray
  • wipes
  • dog food
  • school supplies
  • soap & shampoo
  • deodorant & other hygiene items

Cooking in Hard Times
Jessica Schulz shares the recipe for one of her favorite salad dressings.

I like store-bought dressings, but a salad with a home-made dressing is another thing entirely -- fresh and delicious. The curry and mustard in this recipe give a salad added depth. I love to snip basil and chives from our herb garden, but dried herbs work well too (dill is great). If using fresh oregano, don't use a lot.

French/Swiss Salad Dressing

¼ tsp. curry powder
½ tsp. mustard
Salt to taste (optional)
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 garlic clove, crushed
1-2 Tbsp. of diced herbs (such as basil, dill, tarragon)
1 Tbsp. vinegar
3 Tbsp. oil

Mix all ingredients (except for the oil) together. Add oil, and blend thoroughly. You can use a cruet or make the dressing at the bottom of the salad bowl and toss the salad just before serving. If you increase the amount of the dressing, just keep in mind the vinegar/oil ratio of 1:3.

Care List - 7/26/20

Paul & Bridgit DeMoor lit a candle of joy:   My Aunt is turning 80 tomorrow.  Best Wishes to LaDawn as she helps her mom move to assisted living. Paul thanks all who are making this Zoom church possible.

Kathy Fisher lit a candle of joy:   I had a sweet visit with my son-in-law and grandchildren this weekend. My oldest grandson goes to basic training this week, and his brothers start 8th grade and kindergarten. Love all around!

LaDawn Edwards lit a candle of joy:  Despite the physical, emotional, and logistical challenges of this move, NM offers breathtaking skies, novel wildlife, the exhilaration of spotting a hot air balloon and sweet moments with my wonderful mother.  A special thanks to Bridget DeMoor for watering the church garden.
