50 BEST JOB SEARCH WEBSITES!
ARE YOU WINING THE BATTLE AGAINST BURNOUT?
One of the most powerful hidden barriers to employment in our work is the high level of burnout among workforce program staff and management. In spite of how prevalent this issue is in our programs, very few workforce organizations have well developed plans for helping to reduce the threat of burnout and plans for helping people experiencing burnout. If you are a manager and want information about the management training I provide onsite and by webinar, How to Reduce Anxiety, Burnout and Stress in Your Workforce Organization, email me at
larry@larryrobbin.com. This article will give you some good helpful ideas for recognizing burnout and dealing with it on the individual level.

HOW CAN PEOPLE TAP INTO THE HIDDEN JOB MARKET?
You've heard the term, The Hidden Job Market. But why does it exist and how can you tap into these hidden jobs? The Hidden Job market refers to jobs that are available but haven't been posted or advertised. Approximately 70% of the jobs that are filled every day have not been posted or advertised. Why in the world would a company NOT advertise a job opening? Simple. Because the employer becomes inundated with emails and phone calls and all the work associated with processing applications. In addition, how does the employer know that these applicants are telling the truth and whether or not they will fit into the culture of their business? So it is easier to distribute the opening internally and have employees help by referring their friends and/or family. This serves as a way of pre-vetting candidates. For some great information about how people can tap into the hidden job market, click here.

WE HAVE LOST A GIANT IN OUR FIELD
ON THE PASSING OF GREG NEWTON
Greg Newton was one of the most brilliant minds we have ever had in the workforce development field. I do not know of anyone else with such an encyclopedic knowledge of our work from the highest levels of policy down to the daily tasks of front line staff. He influenced so many of us in the workforce development field. He was an out of the box yet very practical thinker. He was always pushing the field forward with his unwavering commitment and passion for making the work better. Greg had a profound impact on both policy and practice. Even if you have never heard his name, I can tell you that the way you work and the policies that govern your work were touched by his thinking.
Any time I saw that Greg was training, I made it a priority to go to his workshops. My notepad had two columns. One was for his innovative and creative ideas about workforce development. Those brilliant ideas always took my thinking to another level. The other column was notes on what he did as a trainer that made his knowledge so accessible to every one in the room. Those techniques live with me every time I train.
Greg was also an exemplary colleague. Over the years I sent him many Requests for Proposals for training and consulting services that I received from a variety of entities. I sent these to other colleagues as well. But Greg was the only one that never failed to thank me for sending them to him. That was just the kind of person he was. The workforce development field lost a giant with the passing of Greg Newton. Thanks Greg for all you did for all of us. Your legacy continues to inspire us.

Lindsey Drolette, the Employment Program Services Manager, at
Shelter Inc. is using my consulting services to redesign their employment program. We are reviewing all aspects of their program and looking for ways to improve on the good work they are already doing. Shelter Inc. was started in 1986. It works on three fronts. They work to prevent homelessness, end the cycle of homelessness and to provide affordable housing. It is great to see that they see employment as an important part of their work.

SOFT SKILLS ARE SUCCESS SKILLS!
A LIST OF 80 SOFT SKILLS YOU MAY NEVER HAVE THOUGHT OF!
There are a lot of myths about soft skills. One is the universal list of soft skills you must need to succeed in today's world of work. Soft skills preferences are not generic. They are occupation and career specific. For example, the ability to work safely is a highly preferred soft skill in construction, but not in retail services. Customer service skills are highly valued in retail jobs, but of little importance to someone doing night time security work in a warehouse. When we talk about soft skills to job seekers, we should frame the conversation around what type of work they want to do. This list of soft skills will be very helpful in that process.
