Mayor's Award of Excellence: Jason Coons
|
Pictured: Mayor Camp, Sergeant Jason Coons, Police Chief Craig Burnett
Mayor Camp is happy to recognize Police Sergeant Jason Coons this month for his excellent service. Sergeant Coons was recently featured on a segment of ABC4’s “Behind the Badge” along with a UPD officer for their quick action in saving the life of a young woman who had a seizure while driving to school at Taylorsville High School.
On the morning of Jan. 9, Sergeant Coons was on his way home at the conclusion of his graveyard shift when he and UPD Officer Jesse Allen were stopped at the same light on 5400 South. Sergeant Coons observed a teenage driver pass him in the eastbound lanes at a slow rate of speed with a blinker on. He activated his emergency lights, turned around, and got behind the vehicle. He and the UPD officer were able to use their vehicles to move the vehicle off of the road through the use of a tactical maneuver. Once the vehicle was stopped, they broke the window out and turned the vehicle off. The teenager was unconscious and medical personnel were called to attend to her.
If it weren't for the awareness and actions of Sergeant Coons and Officer Allen this incident could have ended tragically. We are very proud of Sergeant Jason Coons and honored to recognize his excellent work.

The cemetery public web map was recently updated to include high-resolution aerial drone photography. It allows viewers to zoom in on the headstones, and in most cases the names are legible. We hope this feature will help visitors find gravesites, as well as allow family members that are far away to virtually visit the cemetery.
