Important Websites for High School Families

1: From the Interim Principal

Greetings SLP Families,

Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for March 18 and 23 from 4:00 - 7:30 p.m. The feedback from fall conferences was so positive in support of the virtual model we provided that we will be replicating that virtual model this spring. All families will have the opportunity to sign up for conference times using our Student Support Time app, just as we did in the fall. Teachers will be sharing the links to sign up for conference time slots soon. Many families told us that they loved not having to stand in long lines to wait for teachers and the entire family could participate in the conferences from the comfort and privacy of their own homes. While this pandemic has been an unprecedented challenge, it has provided opportunities for changes and improvements that we didn't anticipate.

As the Covid pandemic continues, we continue to do our best to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of our students. This has been an incredible challenge, and fatigue is setting in for many. It's hard to believe that we are approaching one full year of this pandemic. Thankfully, Hennepin County provided over 600 vaccines for St. Louis Park staff on Friday, March 5th in the Activity Center at the High School. All staff, including custodians, cooks, student teachers, teachers, paras, administrative assistants and contracted bus drivers- all employees - had the opportunity to sign up for the first round of vaccines. I know staff members will feel much safer once vaccinated. The second dose of the vaccine will be provided on or around April 2.

We are preparing to bring 100% of our students back in April, assuming the Covid numbers continue to trend downward. Superintendent Osei will be making his recommendation for a return date at the School Board meeting on Monday, March 8. In anticipation of that 100% return date, we will be doing what is necessary to plan for a safe and smooth transition while realizing that Cohort C (approximately 35% of our students) are not planning to return to in person learning all year. It is a challenge for our teachers to teach and manage both the students in their classrooms and their students at home. We are calling this a "bi-modal" delivery model. Stay tuned for important transition information once a return date is approved by the Board.

While the weather has warmed up and people are getting outside for some much-needed sunshine and fresh air, please remember to be safe, keep social distancing, wash your hands regularly, and mask up so that our Covid numbers continue to decrease and we can bring our students back to school safely.

Kindly,

Wendy Loberg
Interim Principal
2: 2021 MN Journalist of the YEAR!

CONGRATULATIONS to TALIA LISSAUER who was surprised at an impromptu celebration at school that she was named the 2021 MN Journalist of the Year! This is an enormous honor that recognizes Talia's incredible talents and accomplishments in journalism. Talia is an IB Diploma Candidate at SLP High School, an exceptional student and a wonderful, kind human being. Pictured above are Principal Loberg, Talia, Assistant Principal Busse, and Lori Keekley, Journalism teacher.
3: Heartwarming Moment

Spanish teacher, Nelly Korman, was excited to share a heartwarming moment. She was worried for her students last week but her students are slowly coming out of their shells and showing more of who she knew in person last year. I hope you enjoy this picture as much as Ms. Korman enjoyed and loved this moment.

8: Junior Information
Junior Students and Families,

Even in a distance learning/hybrid format, we have Post-Secondary representatives that want to tell you about their school.

Instead of these representatives coming into the high school, they are hosting a live zoom meeting at specific dates and times for just SLP students.

This is a great time to learn about different post-secondary institutions.
The representatives want to get YOU interested in their campus and program.
This is not an interview, so no pressure. Just click the link to enter the live meeting.

** this is a live link that will update throughout semester two **

10: Change to Chill
With spring just around the corner, many of us are getting outside more and more to take advantage of the sunshine and warmer weather. For active students, the idea of practicing mindfulness isn't always the first thing on their minds. However, research shows that there are many benefits to practicing mindfulness, including reducing overall stress, getting better sleep and recovery, and improving clarity and concentration when it's time to perform, no matter the task. Encourage your active student to check out the Change to Chill for Athletes page on the Change to Chill website for videos, techniques and tips all designed specifically for students on the go!
