SEOWEA and APWA Young Professionals
Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour and Social Hour
Tuesday, October 11, 6:15 - 8:30 p.m.
The SEOWEA Young Professionals along with APWA Young Professionals and Southerly WWTP Staff are hosting a FREEguided tour of the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant (with 1.0 contact hours). Following the tour, there will be an after-hour social at The Brew Brothers.
Come have an evening seeing one of the largest treatment plants in the State and getting a free contact hour. This is also a great opportunity to network and meet local working professionals especially for students or someone looking to get into the field.
Please meet in front of the Administration Building (shown on map) and wear closed toe shoes.
The Ohio Water Environment Association (OWEA) is non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of our water resources. Being a member is not required for this event, but if you would like to get more involved, memberships are located at https://www.ohiowea.org/membership.php and student memberships are free.

Buck Tank
Applications Due Monday, October 15
The Buck Tank is open to any Ohio State undergraduate, in any field of study, who has not conducted research previously. Selected presenters will be tasked with pitching a research or creative inquiry idea related to the Columbus community to a panel of judges. Those deemed as the best will receive an allotted amount of funding to initiate their project.

Buck Tank is open to any Ohio State undergraduate student who has not previously conducted research. We welcome students from all academic disciplines. Buck Tank will be a part of the 2018 Autumn Undergraduate Research Festival on November 1st, 2018 at the Ohio Union.

College of Engineering Distinguished Lecture: Cyber Security in a Connected World featuring Chris Inglis

Mr. Inglis retired from the Department of Defense in January 2014 following over 41 years of federal service, including 28 years at NSA and seven and a half years as its senior civilian and Deputy Director. He began his career at NSA as a computer scientist within the National Computer Security Center followed by tours in information assurance, policy, time-sensitive operations, and signals intelligence organizations. Promoted to NSA's Senior Executive Service in 1997, he held a variety of senior leadership assignments and twice served away from NSA Headquarters, first as a visiting professor of computer science at the U.S. Military Academy (1991-1992) and later as the U.S. Special Liaison to the United Kingdom (2003-2006).

BIM Associate, Revit Draftsperson
From Mark Scott , CSM Instructor: I’m in need of 1-2 students to assist me in modeling buildings in Autodesk Revit and Autodesk BIM 360 Glue. I need the student to begin immediately and continue into through summer, with the possibly of working into and through next year.  
I’m looking for a student with Revit experience in a sophomore or junior status that is familiar with Autodesk Revit. The starting pay is $9-11/hr depending on experience. Student will work in Smith Lab room 3064, my office, around 8-10hrs per week during the remaining part of Autumn Semester and will work 20-38hrs over the summer.   The student(s) needs to be able to work this summer.   Office hours are 7-5p. M-F.
Students will receive additional Autodesk Revit training. 60% of the time the student will be drawing existing conditions in college of engineering buildings to include, structural models, MEP models, Fire protection models and equipment and finish models. 10% of the time, they will be designing new work though modeling surfaces, furniture layouts and signage, 10% they will be scanning existing building rooms with a laser scanner which in turn they will use to create Revit models. 10% of the time they will be exporting Revit models into a merged and aligned BIM 360 Glue model. 10% of the time, will be other duties as assigned.

Farm Foundation January 2019 Round Table Cultivator Program
We are pleased to announce a wonderful opportunity for current students of agriculture to attend the highly-regarded Farm Foundation ® Round Table through our  Cultivator program.  

Up to six upper class or graduate-level students from an accredited North American college or university will be selected from a competitive pool of applicants to participate in the Round Table meeting Jan. 16-18, 2019, at the San Mateo Marriott in San Mateo, CA.  

A program of Farm Foundation, the Round Table is an invitational group of 150 food and agricultural leaders and their guests whom meet semi-annually to discuss issues of importance to agribusiness, the food system and rural communities. The sessions are intended to provide ideas and learning experiences that participants may use in their own activities.  The program for the Silicon Valley meeting will focus on Technology and Innovation.

The Round Table meeting officially begins with a small reception on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019. On Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019, attendees spend the day touring agricultural sites in San Francisco, followed by an opening reception back at the Marriott Hotel. Program sessions will be all day Thursday, the 17 th , and on the morning of Friday, the 18 h .  

Students selected for the Cultivator Program will receive an award that will cover all program fees and room and board. The nominating university or college will be responsible for the student’s travel expenses. If a winning student from a nominating school is unable to attend the Round Table for any reason, another student will be named in their place.

Sigma Xi Research Grant
The Ohio State Chapter of Sigma Xi supports research in all areas of science and engineering including but not limited to: Natural (Physical) Sciences, Biological Sciences, Mathematical & Computer Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Medicine, and Engineering. Sesquicentennial Student Scholar Leadership Program
The Ohio State University is pleased to offer an opportunity in academic year 2019-20, for 150 students to participate in the Sesquicentennial Student Scholar Leadership Program.

These sesquicentennial scholars will:
  • Receive a $2,500 scholarship.
  • Participate in tailored leadership development training led by university faculty and staff (6-8 hours of leadership seminar sessions throughout the academic year).
  • Serve as ambassadors for the sesquicentennial celebration and as representatives of the university, colleges and campuses. Involvement may include being a spokesperson, representative, or volunteer at events, an advocate through social media or other opportunities (an estimated commitment of 18-20 hours for undergraduate students and 14-16 hours for graduate/professional students throughout the academic year).

Graduate Assistantships to Study Urban Streams
The Watershed Hydrology Lab in the Departments of Geology and Biological Sciences at Kent State University are seeking two graduate assistants for an  NSF-funded collaborative project  aimed at understanding how stormwater management decisions translate to hydrologic and environmental outcomes in urban streams in Cleveland (Ohio) and Denver (Colorado). These funded graduate student researchers will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists that includes ecologists, hydrologists, and social scientists across three institutions. Changes Coming to the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum
Significant changes are coming to the 24th Richard J. and Martha D. Denman Undergraduate Research Forum. This past summer a Faculty Committee was convened to explore options for re-envisioning the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum moving forward.  
The Committee recommended that the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry host two events during spring semester, including the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum (February 20, 2019) and Spring Undergraduate Research Festival (March 26, 2019).
The 2019 Denman Research Forum will be limited to graduating seniors and we are adding elements to the application process. The application process consists of:
  • Demographic information
  • Research/creative project title and 300 word abstract (with stated results)
  • 2-minute video submitted via YouTube link
  • Advising report 

Two Minute videos need to cover:
  • Introduction of researcher
  • Description of his/her research including results found
  • Description of why he/she would like to participate in the Denman Forum

The submission window is November 1st until 5:00pm on December 5th, 2018. The event will be held February 20th, 2019.

We have a new event this year, the Spring Research Forum, open to all undergraduate researchers!
Researchers can be at any point in the research process and will have the option to choose between three presentation options:
  • Poster Presentation
  • Oral Presentation
  • 3 Minute Thesis 

2018 International Photography Competition
All students, faculty, staff, visiting scholars and alumni of The Ohio State University are invited to submit their photos to the 2018 International PhotographyCompetition. Entries will be accepted through October 8. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your original photographs from around the world. In addition to honoring the Best in Show, first, second and third place winners will be selected in the following categories: People, Places and Arts & Culture. There will also be People's Choice awards for the photos that receive the highest votes via the Facebook voting phase.
