Coastal Cities Trail Inventory Complete

Northeast Wisconsin cities contain numerous public off-road trails that provide residents and visitors with valuable recreation opportunities, such as biking, running, hiking, etc. However, all of the public off-road trails in and adjacent to a community are not always identified by a single source. Multiple sources are typically needed to find all of the existing trails. For example, there are prominent State trails profiled on the websites and brochures of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. However, in many instances, county, community, university, organization or other public trails are not included with these sources.

In an effort to remedy the difficulty of navigating multiple community and organization trail maps, the Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission conducted a thorough field inventory of all public off-road, non-motorized trails for the nine coastal cities along Lake Michigan in northeast Wisconsin (i.e. the cities of Marinette, Oconto, Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay, Algoma, Kewaunee, Two Rivers, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan).

The final report developed for the project provides a connectivity analysis and offers recommendations aimed at establishing an efficient coastal trail network that integrates beach access and the Lake Michigan Water Trail and provides public off-road trail connections that links coastal cities.

As of result of this study, 60 trails were inventoried covering 211 miles within (and extending outside) the nine coastal cities in northeast Wisconsin A webpage has been created to make the inventory, maps, and report publicly accessible. The database is downloadable into Google Earth where route planning between trails can be undertaken easily.

Economic and Demographic Reports

Each regional planning commission has contracted with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) to provide economic and demographic reports for counties, communities, and economic development organizations within their respective regions. These reports are valuable in evaluating local conditions and projecting future economic and demographic trends. Samples of the types of reports that can be generated and formats in which they can be created can be found here.

Sheboygan MPO Update

In January, Commission staff revised the distribution of housing, population, employment and school enrollment changes under all three 2045 growth scenarios based on comments received at the MPO Technical and Policy Advisory Committee joint meetings held in 2013.  In late January, Commission staff also updated housing, population and employment changes under Scenario #3 (Corridor Development) based on discussion at the January 23, 2014, Sheboygan MPO Technical and Policy Advisory Committees joint meeting.

Commission staff began preparing chapters of the Year 2045 Sheboygan Area Transportation Plan (SATP) in January. The first chapter under preparation is Chapter 3 (Profile of the Metropolitan Planning Area).

At their January 23, 2014, joint meeting, the Sheboygan MPO Technical and Policy Advisory Committees reviewed changes to Tables 5 (Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Projects) and 6 (Street and Highway Improvement Projects) of the Sheboygan Metropolitan Planning Area Transportation Improvement Program (TIP): Calendar Years 2013 - 2016, and recommended moving forward with a public comment period on these amendments (together with any changes to the transit and elderly and disabled transportation elements of the TIP).  Commission staff worked with Shoreline Metro staff and with staff from the Sheboygan County Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) to amend Tables 1 (Transit Operating Funds), 2 (Transit Capital Items), 3 (Elderly and Disabled Transportation Projects), and 4 (Elderly and Disabled Transportation Capital Projects) of the 2013 - 2016 TIP in late January.
