October 2018 library news

Dear Library Friends --
I love October. Yes, it's cold and rainy today, but isn't that just a great excuse to curl up with a good book or pop a spooky movie in the DVD player? If you're in that kind of cozy, autumn frame of mind we've scheduled a few events this month that might appeal to you. Read on for more details about a program on fungi in our forest ecosystems,
Our Wisconsin magazine editor Mike Beno visiting the library near the end of the month, a soup tasting and recipe swap, and more.
In other good news, our 2018 Fall Celebration was a
huge success. Thank you so much to all who donated items and to our supporters who attended the event, bought raffle tickets, took a chance at the "wine pull," and purchased items in the auctions. It was a record year both in number of attendees and the amount of money we raised for the library. Please take a moment to
check out our list of sponsors and to thank the Friends of the Library for all their hard work. All of the money raised will support the things we do here at the library to help Mercer residents and visitors stay informed, entertained, and connected to their community. Thank you!

Fantastic Fungi
Fungi are often overlooked, misunderstood, and underappreciated. Yet these diverse and highly evolved organisms are critical to function of forest ecosystems. Learn more about these fascinating organisms with Glen Stanosz, a Wisconsin native and Professor of Tree and Forest Health at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Stanosz will present
"Fantastic Fungi" on Thursday, October 11th at 6:30pm. This program is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Wisconsin Science Festival and the University of Wisconsin Speakers Bureau. For more information, call the library at 715-476-2366.

Mike Beno talks media
Our Wisconsin was launched in 2013 and rapidly became the most popular magazine ever devoted to the state. The
Iron County Outdoor Recreation Enthusiasts (ICORE) and the library will host editor Mike Beno for a talk about the beginnings of
Our Wisconsin, communication, and the current media landscape on
Tuesday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. The program will be held at the Mercer Community Center and is free and open to all. The program begins at 7pm after ICORE's annual meeting and potluck. For more information,
