When we look back on 2018-2019 next June, I believe we will find week #6 to be one of the most important school weeks of the school year. This week is packed with important events beginning with our Scholastic Book Fair opening at 9:00 AM Monday and concluding with the distribution of 1st quarter Progress Reports on Friday afternoon.

Of course the high point of the week is our annual Open House which is segmented into two parts: sixth grade on Tuesday evening followed by 7th & 8th grades on Thursday evening. Please, if you have a student attending Lake Nona Middle, try to make every effort to attend. Below you will find a special section which includes brochures for both evenings. Our students and teachers are very much looking forward to showcasing their work and the classrooms!

I hope this edition finds you having enjoyed a pleasant weekend. I look forward to seeing you at Open House this week.

In Knights Honor,

Please stop by the PTSA and SAC tables to meet members of these organizations; they will be happy to answer any questions for you!

Mr. Rivera has earned the distinction of OCPS Latinos in Action Teacher of the Month. Latinos in Action (LIA) engages Latino male and female students to improve themselves through education, leadership, and service. Students in LIA celebrate and honor the diverse cultures that contribute to their Latino heritage. Students have several opportunities for key leadership experiences and are engaged in learning by working with elementary school students on a weekly basis with reading skills and comprehension and planning several community service projects throughout the school year.

The Scholastic Book Fair has arrived!

LNMS Scholastic Book Fair. Set up in the Media Center for students and families (Sept. 14).

The Scholastic book fair will be here through Friday, September 21st. The fair is open in the media center from 9:00 am until approximately 4:15 pm Monday through Friday, except Wednesday when we will be open until 3:30 pm.  We will also be open the evenings of Open House on Tuesday and Thursday. Cash, credit cards, and debit cards are gladly accepted. Online shopping can also be done and there are many more options available through the online fair.

Books always make terrific gifts and the holiday season
will be here before we know it!

About the Book Fair eWallet Option . . .
  • Parents can also add funds to a eWallet so that students do not need to bring any money to school. When you create an eWallet, the amount you select as your student's spending limit will appear as a temporary hold (or pending charge) on your credit card and will be reflected in your available balance. You will only be charged for what is purchased, and after the book fair ends, the hold will expire and the funds will be released back to your credit card.
  • Additional funds can be added to the eWallet at any time. You can also cancel funds. Track spending and see all activity in your order history through your MyScholastic account.
  • Student eWallets are looked up at the book fair using the student's name, grade, or teacher; eWallets do not have to be printed or presented to a cashier.
  • You must create an eWallet for each student; accounts cannot be shared or transferred.
  • If any items purchased during the fair are returned, the amount will be credited back to your card. Processing times may vary. Contact your credit card company for specific information regarding your account.
* The website to go to in order to shop online or add funds to an eWallet is:

New Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book - "The Meltdown"

Another highlight is the pre-sale of the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book. The Meltdown, Jeff Kinney's 13th installment of his Wimpy Kid franchise will be released for sale on October 30th.  If your student orders and prepays during our fair, a copy of the novel will be sent to us and we will get it out to them that same day!

Thank You Very Much!

All sales help the LNMS Media Center as we receive a portion of the proceeds. Thank you for supporting the media center and our programs.

Knight Challenge

This past week, approximately 200 students spent a "Challenge Day" engaged in a social and emotional learning program that offers our middle school an opportunity to shift toward greater school connectedness, empathy, and inclusivity. The program goes beyond traditional anti-bullying efforts, building empathy and inspiring a school-wide movement of compassion and positive change.

Last week we addressed some common issues seen in most schools including cliques, gossip, rumors, negative judgments, teasing, harassment, isolation, stereotypes, intolerance, racism, sexism, bullying, violence, suicide, hopelessness, apathy, and hidden pressures to create an image, achieve or live up to the expectations of others.

Soccer Update
This past week our Knight soccer teams continued their quest to make it to playoffs for the county championship. On Monday, our boys and girls teams played Cornerstone and won both games. Our boys came out firing with three quick goals in the first 10 minutes of play and ended the game early winning 8-0. Our Lady Knights got off to a slow start, but after some strategic coaching from Coach Stoeckigt, our girls were a different team in the second half. Valentina Mora scored our first goal from near mid-field and the rest was history. Our girls scored four goals in the second half winning 4-2.

Wednesday evening was a little different for our boys team. We knew that Walker was going to be a tough opponent and sure enough they came out aggressive with a quick goal. Our Knights replied back and tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from Aaron Presley, but it wasn't long before Walker scored again in the first half. After tremendous defense and great play in the second half, both teams ended up scoreless, giving our gentlemen their first loss of the season. Our gentlemen are currently tied for first place in the division. Our ladies dominated against Walker from start to finish. Scorers: Camila Leon Larios and Anaya Brown both contributed two goals while Annarela Martinez scored one after an amazing pass from Isabella Bonilla.

This week our teams play away. Monday we play at South Creek and Wednesday at Freedom. Best of luck and keep up the good work Knights!

Thank you,

Irimar Hernandez, Athletic Director

Monday's Motivational Moment!

A DISH OF ICE CREAM

Many years ago, a 10-year-old boy walked up to the counter of a soda shop and climbed onto a stool. He caught the eye of the waitress and asked, "How much is an ice cream sundae?"

"Fifty cents," the waitress replied. The boy reached into his pockets, pulled out a handful of change, and began counting. The waitress frowned impatiently. After all, she had other customers to wait on.

The boy squinted up at the waitress. "How much is a dish of plain ice cream?" he asked. The waitress sighed and rolled her eyes. "Thirty-five cents," she said with a note of irritation.

Again, the boy counted his coins. At last, he said, "I'll have the plain ice cream, please." He put a quarter and two nickels on the counter. The waitress took the coins, brought the ice cream, and walked away.

About ten minutes later, she returned and found the ice cream dish empty. The boy was gone. She picked up the empty dish - then swallowed hard.

There on the counter, next to the wet spot where the dish had been, were two nickels and five pennies. The boy had had enough for a sundae, but he had ordered plain ice cream so he could leave her a tip.

The lesson for our Knights? Don't be so quick to judge others. You never know what someone's real intentions may be. They may be a very fine person with their heart in the right place.
