UCI's Institute & Museum of California Art Debuts with
"First Glimpse" of the Buck Collection
A work by Richard Diebenkorn in the collection.

The Institute and Museum of California Art (IMCA) at University of California, Irvine, will become the premier repository, research center and exhibition space for our state's art as a result of two very large gifts--one from the family of James Irvine, which has collected plein air and California Impressionist Art over several generations, and one from the late Gerald Buck, who collected the works of notable modern and contemporary California artists. The Irvine collection totals more than 1,800 works and the Buck collection more than 3,200. While the Irvine collection has been exhibited for many years, especially through The Irvine Museum (now owned and operated by UCI), the Buck collection has never been open to the public. UCI's Claire Trevor School of the Arts is now providing a "First Glimpse" exhibition of a representative sampling of several dozen works from the Buck collection in two galleries on campus. Next steps include the opening of a 15,000 square foot space in an existing building adjacent to the UCI campus to house IMCA and exhibit works from the collection while raising the funds needed to build IMCA's permanent facilities on campus over the next several years.  More here.

PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY NAMES NEW PRESIDENT/
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
TOMMY PHILLIPS
The Philharmonic Society of Orange County announced today the appointment of Tommy Phillips as its new President and Artistic Director. Phillips succeeds John Mangum, who stepped down from this role in April to become the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Houston Symphony. In a career spanning more than 15 years, Phillips has held artistic positions and programming consultancies at orchestras across the country, including the San Diego Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Pacific Symphony, and Mainly Mozart Festival, among others. Phillips is also the co-founder of Black Cats Production Company, an international touring and performing arts organization bringing performing ensembles to China and Chinese ensembles to the United States. Phillips attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, earning his bachelor's degree in Music Performance (trombone) and went on to pursue Graduate studies in Trombone Performance and Arts Administration at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory. Phillips is married to Julie Smith Phillips, Principal Harpist for the San Diego Symphony. They have two young children. More here.
