Well, it's definitely summer!

We want you to enjoy the trails safely in the heat! The number one tip is to exercise common sense and don't overdo it. When you do go out:
Start early before the sun really gets going.
Wear sun protection in the form of SPF, a hat, and loose-fitting long sleeves and pants (yes, really).
Bring water! Take sips early and often.
Adjust your pace or even your hike entirely -- go for an easier trail that offers shade instead of something more difficult or out in the open.
Take extra care of your dog. Remember they don't tolerate the heat like we do! More hot weather hiking tips

SDG&E Presents Conservancy with Environmental Champions Grant!
|
During the Conservancy's Volunteer Appreciation Night at Viewpoint Brewing Co. last month, Morgan Justice-Black of SDG&E presented Executive Director Trish with a $7,500 grant for our Microclimates on a Macro Scale program! The grant is part of SDG&E's Environmental Champions program.
Microclimates on a Macro Scale is a new climate-science program, launching this fall at a local charter school. The Conservancy will team up with Climate Science Alliance to obtain regionally-specific climate data to increase understanding of how climate change impacts different microclimates within the San Dieguito watershed.

Conservancy Education Manager Ana Lutz Recognized by Del Mar Unified School District
|
On June 27th, Education Manager Ana Lutz was recognized by the Del Mar Unified School District as an Industry Expert. The award recognizes the growing relationship with the School District and the Conservancy's Watershed Explorers Program.
Paul Intravaia, Design Engineer, Del Mar Union School District shared, "We are grateful for your service to our students as an Industry Expert propelling student thinking forward, and expanding their awareness of future work and ways to add value to our world."

Enrichment Programs for Sikes Docents
|
The docents and volunteers of Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead have varied jobs, which encompass many different programs and responsibilities. Different tour groups and students of all age groups visit the site every month with varied educational and interpretive needs. Students in the fourth grade experience a program designed to accommodate California's History and Social Science Standards, while a group of adult students in a Continuing Education program tend to ask different questions and like to share their own stories and experiences.

8/26 - Full Moon Hike at the San Dieguito Lagoon
Join us for a full moon hike on the Dust Devil Nature Trail at the San Dieguito Lagoon. This 1.7-mile loop trail is easy, short and flat. Dogs on leash are welcome.

Watershed Explorers Visit the San Dieguito Lagoon
Last month, Kids on Campus, a program run through the San Marcos Unified School District, participated in San Dieguito Lagoon portion of the Watershed Explorers Program. These elementary school students participated in a Ranger-led hike where they learned about the importance and history of the Lagoon, the diversity of lagoon flora and fauna, and the story of its conservation and restoration.
Students observed fiddler crabs, jumping mullet, Cliff Swallows, and hiked to the Osprey nests. At the treatment ponds, the ranger taught the students how to test the water quality and how human activity in the watershed contributes to nitrate and phosphate content, as well as PH levels and dissolved oxygen. After the hike, the students enjoyed an River Park Ranger-led talk on animal adaptations from the wildlife that is endemic to the San Dieguito River watershed.
Later, they reflected on what they experienced and learned during their day at the lagoon-what we call Art of Nature. Hopefully, these students left with a sense of understanding of the interconnectedness of the watershed and of the lagoon's importance that will continue their whole lives.

Hike for Health
SDRVC teamed up with UMTR2ME (You Matter 2 Me), another local non-profit who focuses on providing support and resources to those with depression and mental health challenges, to provide a mental health hike around the San Dieguito Lagoon.
Participants were given an educational look into the sensitivity of the surrounding habitat, and also a safe space to discuss mental health while hiking. By incorporating healthy exercise in areas around the River Park, SDRVC and UMTR2ME strongly believe of the positive impacts of movement and experiencing the outdoors. Be sure to sign up for our next hike this upcoming fall!

Outreach in Rancho Santa Fe
On Saturday, July 28th, Conservancy Conservation Manager Jonathan Appelbaum and Fairbanks Ranch Project Partners with the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District, Rancho Santa Fe Association, and local Fire Safe Council attended the annual Fairbanks Ranch Summer BBQ and car show to conduct outreach to Fairbanks Ranch residents and project neighbors. Dozens of residents and neighbors checked out displays from SDRVC and the Fire Protection District and signed up to get additional information about the project and fire safety within the Ranch.
