Victorian Home Demolition A family who once owned and resided in an historical home on 6th Street is asking the borough to stay a demolition planned for February. The home, built between 1895 and 1900, is one of the borough's oldest homes. Although vacant, the developer who bought the property expects the home be torn down so a newer residential structure can be built overlooking the water views of Townsend's Inlet. The family has launched an effort to preserve the structure; the proposal involves moving the house to the parking lot next to the History Center. Time is short for the borough to consider the proposal, and there are no policies and practices in place for the use of public funds for historical preservation.
Stone Harbor Bulkhead Height Ordinance Though the height of bulkheads is mandated by borough ordinances, raising the bulkhead height is being considered because of the steady rise in sea level and an increase in bayside flooding. Stockton University Coastal Research Center has completed a study mapping the elevations of the bayside bulkheads. This study relies on average tidal range while the borough regulations are set at 7.5' about mean sea level. According to a CapeMayCounty Herald.com article there are about 50 bulkheads that are significantly lower than the prevalent height of 6-6.5'. The resulting gaps in the bulkhead wall gives way to nuisance flooding during major rain events, extreme high tides and weather events causing high wave action. The borough is reviewing forecasts by FEMA for projected water heights 10, 20 and 50 years in to the future. Council member, Raymond Parzych states that "We need to do something short-term about the 40-50 bulkheads that are so low they frequently allow flooding of the whole community." The debate must also include the issue of how property owners are to afford the new bulkheads.
Atlantic City Electric Project The new substation on 60th Street is now complete with new utility poles from 60th Street south into Stone Harbor. This upgrade of the feeder distribution will provide better reliability and faster recovery in case of a power outage. New electrical distribution lines will be run along the east side of Dune Drive from 80th Street to 34/35th Street replacing old wood poles with slightly larger new wood poles as well as replacement of older transformers. The street lighting will be replaced with LED lights for enhanced safety, a uniform appearance along the main thoroughfare, better efficiency and improved cost savings.
