Riptide is a summer swim program for ages 5 to 18. Registration is open for the spring stroke clinic and summer season.

Welcome Back, East School!
|
On the first day of school East Elementary began the year with an all-school assembly with a focus on reviewing the school's rules and PBIS expectations.
PBIS stands for
positive behavioral interventions and supports. There are three main components of PBIS are:

Teaching appropriate behavior in school settings.
-
Recognizing students when behavior expectations are met.
-
Providing interventions when behavior expectations are not met.
PBIS is a team based school-wide design for discipline which includes all students and all staff in all settings. It is proactive, preventive, and positive.
PBIS has three core values:

Includes following directions, keeping hands and feet to yourself, using appropriate language, and raising your hand.
The students got involved by singing
the East school song led by music teacher Mrs. Susan Lapin, then participating in a controlled discussion with Baraboo Police Chief Mark Schauf on the importance of keeping our hands to ourselves and appropriate and inappropriate touch.

The Voice's Jared Blake Speaks on Drugs, Alcohol at JYMS
|
On Sept. 12 Jack Young Middle School had the opportunity to have country-music singer Jared Blake speak to students.
Jared appeared on NBC's "The Voice" (Season 1) as a semi-finalist.
The school had an assembly with a mini-concert and the kids were able to meet Jared afterward. The kids were very excited in welcoming Mr. Blake in discussing how to choose their own unique path in life, free from the use of drugs or alcohol.

Homecoming Parade Drivers Needed
|
Baraboo High School's Student Council is looking for another convertible driver or two for the Homecoming parade!
The parade is
Friday, Sept. 28th at
3:30 p.m. downtown Baraboo on the Square.
There is a drivers meeting at the high school at
3 p.m. the same day and there are a few forms to fill out as soon as possible regarding insurance/background check.

BHS FFA Hosts 8th Grade Ag Day
|
The Baraboo Agricultural Education Advisory Council sponsored a "Career Fair at the Fair" for all eighth grade students in the Baraboo School District at the Sauk County Fairgrounds today, September 13, 2018.
Students moved
from learning station to learning station throughout the day, assisted by
Baraboo High School FFA members who introduced the presenters for each session.
Presenters gave oral presentations, discussion job possibilities related to their career area, salary, internship possibilities, and educational requirements. They followed with a "hands on" activity for the students to participate in relating to their career, ranging from how to harvest honey (along with a taste test!), which plants are edible (with another taste test!), taking group selfies using a drone, bobbing for apples and more!
Some of the career clusters that were represented by the presenters included:

- Fruit Farming
- DNR
- Livestock Marketing
- Ag Innovations
- Crop Scouting Technologies
- Beekeeping
- Dairy Science

Baraboo School District Presents 'Paper Tigers'
|
The Baraboo School District will host a viewing of the film 'Paper Tigers' on October 9th, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. at the UW-Baraboo Fine and Performing Arts Theatre, 1006 Connie Road, Baraboo.
Paper Tigers follows a year in the life of an alternative high school that has radically changed its approach to disciplining its students, becoming a promising model for how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families.
"Stressed brains can't learn."
That was the nugget of neuroscience that Jim Sporleder, principal of a high school riddled with violence, drugs and truancy, took away from an educational conference in 2010. Three years later, the number of fights at Lincoln Alternative High School had gone down by 75% and the graduation rate had increased five-fold.
Paper Tigers is the story of how one school made such dramatic progress. Following six students over the course of a school year, we see Lincoln's staff try a new approach to discipline: one based on understanding and treatment rather than judgment and suspension.
Using a combination of vérité and revealing diary cam footage, Paper Tigers is a testament to what the latest developmental science is showing: that just one caring adult can help break the cycle of adversity in a young person's life.
This movie contains language and content that may not appropriate for young children. Families and youth, ages 14 & up are welcome to attend. Public Health and Sauk County Department of Human Services will be available for questions.

Special Education Students Receive Donation for Equine Therapy
|
East Elementary School special education teacher Mrs. Mary Bildsten
's community connection with BREATHE (Baraboo River Equine-Assisted Therapies, Inc.)
received a $500 donation from the Baraboo Optimist Club for students to take part in therapeutic riding sessions.
The students will be assisting with the Harvest Hoedown from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. October 27 to help raise money for the program. There will be Pig Roast, live music, treats and games. Please come and support and have some fun!

Important Information from KID STOP

The Baraboo School District Kid Stop program would like parents to please be aware of the following:

Please check your parent portal in Infinite Campus to pay your Kid Stop fees on a regular basis.

If you receive assistance from the county, check your balance and pay the amount due with your WIShares EBT card.
Pay only the balance due
. If you do not have enough funds on your card, the balance due is your copay.

Entrance doors to Kid Stop are locked at all times. A staff member will open the door for you to enter and sign out your child/children.

Please inform the following if you have a change in your child's after school plans
by 2:30 pm at the latest
.

Call and leave a voice message at your child's Kid Stop site.

Contact the administrative assistant in the office at your child's school.

Inform your child's teacher.
By contacting Kid Stop, the office, and your child's teacher, this will ensure that everyone is aware of your child's change of plans.

Please remember, if we do not have a schedule or advance notice that your child will be attending Kid Stop, we will not be expecting them to attend.

Culbertson Presented with $1,000 Scholarship
|
Eli Culbertson received a $1,000 scholarship at Baraboo High School on Tuesday.
Eli applied to be a BETA tester for BLUR, a
new private messaging and gaming app. He was one of just 10 scholarship recipients.

The Baraboo Girls Club Basketball Registration Now Open
|
The Baraboo Girls Basketball Club is now open for the 2018-19 basketball season.
The club is for students in 3rd through 8th grade and teaches the fundamentals of basketball, as well as sportsmanship and game play.
Baraboo Girls Club Basketball works hand in hand with the Baraboo High School Girls Basketball program to introduce and teach a playing style that will transition the girls into the high school program. By integrating these groups, the club ensures a bright future for girls basketball in Baraboo!

Come to the Harvest Hoedown!
|
Special Education teachers Mary Bildsten and Shelley Mordini, along with their students, will assist with a Harvest Hoedown from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 27 at Wild Rose Ranch, Baraboo, to raise money for their Equine Therapy program with BREATHE (
Baraboo River Equine-Assisted Therapies, Inc.).
Students will have a booth to sell treats and talk more about the Horse Therapy Program.
There will also be Pig Roast, live music, more treats and games. We hope to see you there!

Please join us for Parent Teacher Conferences from Oct. 23-Oct. 25. Your child's school will schedule a time and date for conferences.
During PT Conferences, the teacher will review your child's progress, including strengths and areas in need of improvement.
Top 3 reasons to attend Parent Teacher Conferences:
1) Show your child you are invested in their academic career
- When children know their parents are invested in their education they feel encouraged and are motivated
2) Improve communication between parents and teachers
- The in-person meetings can help parents put a face to a name

Save The Date: Food For Kidz Event Set for March 30
|
 Save the Date for the Baraboo High School Interact Club's second annual Food for Kidz meal packing event, set for March 30, 2019!
Food for Kidz is a non-profit organization that helps individuals from around the United States set up Mobile Meal packaging events.
The food that is packaged during these events is shipped around the world to children living in poverty. Shipments have been sent to Honduras, Puerto Rico, Sri Lanka, Haiti, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Afghanistan, and even Houston, TX, after Hurricane Harvey last year.

Attendance Matters: Every Student. Every Day. Every Grade.
|
September is Attendance Awareness month, and for good reason! It's the start of the school year, so let's start it off right: with good attendance!
Research shows that poor attendance in the month of September can predict chronic absenteeism for the rest of the school year. In fact, if a student misses two days in September, they are 50% more likely to be chronically absent that school year.
Chronic absence in the Baraboo School District is defined as missing 10% of school in a school year. As there are 180 days in the school year, missing 10% means missing a total of 18 days during the year, or about 2 days a month.
These can be excused or unexcused absences.

BHS Homecoming Steak Feed Fundraiser Set for Sept. 26
|
Baraboo High School Athletics Department will hold a BHS Homecoming Steak Feed on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at Pierce's Express Market, 935 8th Street, Baraboo, from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Meals for adults will be $9 and include a steak or chicken sandwich, coleslaw, beans and a drink. There will also be a $5 hot dog kids meal available.
All proceeds will benefit the Baraboo High School Athletic Department.

 The International Crane Foundation has
developed an Adventure Pass program in coordination with the Baraboo Public Library.
The Adventure Pass program allows patrons of the South Central Library System to check out the pass through the Baraboo Public Library and receive free admission to the International Crane Foundation.
The Adventure Pass program will continue through
October 31, 2018
. There are 10 passes available. Library patrons can check out the Adventure Pass for one week. The pass allows admission for 2 adults and up to 4 children, ages 6 through 17. It will not be valid for school field trips.
The Adventure Pass program is supported in part by a grant from the Sauk County UW-Extension, Arts and Culture Committee, Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Baraboo Athletics Department is excited to announce Pierce's Express Market, located at 935 8th St, Baraboo, has
installed a pair of Thundberbird Pride gas pumps at its location.
Pierce's will donate two cents per gallon to a variety of BHS sports and clubs for gas purchased at those two specific pumps. A different group will be selected each month as the beneficiary. Please consider supporting our programs by using these pumps.

Baraboo School District Offers Volunteer Training
|
The Baraboo School District continues to welcome volunteers within each of our schools.
In order to best support our numerous school volunteers, we are offering volunteer trainings at West School (707 Center St.) on September 20 from 12:30-1:30 PM or September 24 from 4:00-5:00 PM. School volunteers from any of our schools are welcome to attend either of these trainings to better understand the role and dynamics of a school volunteer along with receiving some information about school district volunteer expectations. The volunteer training is completely optional and open to all school district volunteers.
Thank you to our many school volunteers and community partners for all of the ways in which you support and impact each of our Baraboo schools.
