One of the most difficult concepts for most business owners and salespeople to understand is the distinction between a benefit and a feature.
Most of us are excited about what our products do, or are made of, or look like, or whatever. We forget the thing that makes it so exciting to us may not resonate with the potential buyer.
People buy when they see a benefit to them in the item or service presented. Once we understand what the benefit(s) is/are, we can present those to entice the sale.
How do you find the benefit? Finish the sentence with "so that...."
For example, I have an item that is 30% lighter than the competition. So what?
Well, this widget is 30% lighter than any other one on the market SO THAT the buyer saves money on shipping on every order.
There's the benefit - the buyer saves money.
Give them the "so that...." and you've given them their benefit.
If you're a landscaping company or a garden center, this is a great opportunity to promote your services. Whether your area loves lush, green lawns or drough-resistant plants, every "lawn" needs care.
