701 Center for Contemporary Arts Presents:
The Shape of Things
The Shape of Things presents works of art that are defined visually by distinctive shapes and collectively occupy an area where abstraction and representation meet. Some of the work has clear representational elements but on certain levels reads as abstract. Other works are mostly abstract or even non-objective but can trigger associations with the representational world. The exhibition, therefore, plays with the relative nature of abstraction and non-objectivity on the one hand and representation and figuration on the other.

The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes
The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes offers an interactive experience combining science with history and culture to bring to life the historic underpinnings of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s rich and vibrant stories.

Museum visitors will learn how Sherlock Holmes, a scientific expert ahead of his time, used seemingly trivial observations of clues others missed to solve some of his era’s most puzzling mysteries. His practices and techniques, created in the mind of doctor-turned-author Conan Doyle, encouraged a change in the way police work was conducted, and remain in practice today.

Guests will be transported into Sherlock Holmes’ London to solve a mystery in a world newly introduced to his groundbreaking methods, and then transported back into present day with a pop culture gallery that shows Sherlock Holmes in all his manifestations from books to movies.

Notes from the Underground: Poster Design from the Hippie Era
In the summer of 2017, the Columbia Museum of Art acquired over 100 rock posters from the collection of design historian Mel Byars. A selection from this gift is on view.
Each of these ephemeral objects represents an event — a musical show at a venue that encouraged dancing, psychedelic light shows, and hallucinatory drug taking. The designers of these posters created complicated visual experiences with image mashups and vibrating color combinations.
