Sketchbooks and Portable Art Materials.

Welcome back to another BobBlast.

This BobBlast I talk about and demo how I sketch and paint on location with only a sketchbook, water soluble color pencils, a pen and a hat.

So I'm getting ready and practicing paint sketching outdoors for my April 2018 workshop... cruising by riverboat throughout Paris and beyond. We pack light - leaving more room for enjoying the places we visit.

My sketchbooks vary, but for now I prefer the Stillman & Birn spiral-bound, the Canson 90 lb. Drawing Book or Holbein's sketch pads. All wonderful paper for notes, watermedia sketches and drawing. My favorite sketching pens are Faber-Castell Pitt Artist pens - I use all three nib sizes.

For color, I rely on Derwent Inktense Colored Pencils and Blocks - they look like pastels, but they're not! I sketch with a dry colored pencil, then wet the surface with a brush, paper towel or my finger. When all is dry, the painting is permanent. See! Light-hearted and fun!

For me, painting on location should not be a chore or a task. I love painting in my studio. I prefer to bring the same approach when outside. However, sketching outdoors reminds me to stop, slow down and observe. I tend to appreciate the entire experience more. Being there and present... and being an artist in situ.

A brief reminder... to see all the art materials I use, go to my website and look for a Red Button - Studio Resources.
