E3 | EXCEEDING EVERY EXPECTATION!

Start of Week #6
This past week we concluded the 5th week of 2018-2019. In fact, we will be issuing 1st quarter Progress Reports on September 21st. With this in mind, if you have a student attending Meadowbrook and you feel that they may need some additional support in one or more of their classes, please remember that we do offer after-school tutoring. Please take advantage of this sooner rather than later as the students' content area material is very often cumulative - building off of prior lessons with every coming new week. Than you.

Tutoring Schedule
Tutoring is offered Monday and Tuesdays after school, 4:15 pm - 5:35 pm. Students need to turn in the Academic Tutoring Program Permission Slip to sign up. Tutoring is also available on select Saturdays, 9 am - 1 pm. Tutoring is offered for Reading/Language Arts, Math, Civics, and 8th Grade Science.

Congratulations to Meadowbrook's Dr. Hardick!
Dr. David Hardrick is the North Learning Community Assistant Principal of the Year for OCPS (pictured very top). Dr. Hardrick is an example of a well-rounded leader who possesses a diverse leadership background - from starting as an elementary teacher, working as an MTSS coach, curriculum coaching, discipline dean experience, and a leader as an assistant principal.

His experiences allows him to assist any student, parent, teacher, or faculty member on campus. Daily, he makes decisions about what is in the student's best interest. Dr. Hardrick has been providing his leadership and expertise to support learning at Meadowbrook for three years, since 2015. Dr. Hardrick was instrumental in supporting the school with the leadership team during the 2016-2017 school year when Meadowbrook's school grade progressed from a "D" to a "C". Dr. Hardrick will next represent the North Learning Community as a finalist for OCPS' Assistant Principal of the Year.

I hope you enjoy this latest update. Make it a great week!

"Trivia Tuesdays" with Mrs. Hunter

Mrs. Hunter is pictured in action re-starting Trivia Tuesday for 2018-2019. Students are provided a trivia question to answer to earn a small reward for stretching their minds. The trivia question for the day may relate to science, math, or history related topics to stretch the minds of students. Mrs. Hunter said , "It's always exciting to see students eager to participate and compete in answering the questions."

"Mrs. Hunter also requires students to write down their answers to show their thought process in answering the question," says Mrs. Rogers. "Trivia questions often make our students think outside the box or use resources to find answers. Some students just love getting a special treat throughout the day as using their knowledge to gain it makes a smile worth it!," shared Mrs. Hunter.

Blended Learning

Meadowbrook Middle School is in the first year of implementing blended learning into the classroom to increase student engagement and to incorporate 21st century skills. Students started the school year learning to use their new digital tools which use online apps such Canvas, Google Tools, and others to enhance their learning.

Mrs. Curry's English Language Arts class was observed using Canvas while online with their digital devices to respond to higher order thinking questions related to the text they were reading.

Let the games begin!

Building a New Culture at Meadowbrook
In response to parent, community, and student feedback from AdvancEd surveys, Meadowbrook Middle School started planning how to build culture and climate in the school and to provide. A major goal is to give students a different way to connect to school and build in excitement and a love for their school in a new way.

The House System
During the 2017-2018 school year, students voted on a theme for the house system. After students chose the Black Panther as the theme for the house system, students voted on houses they wanted to see as part of the school. "It is very important that staff and students be a part of the process to build the house system so they feel connected and invested," said Mrs. Rogers.

Rollout of the House System in August
After a long summer of planning and preparation to create the house system, the first "House Meeting" was hosted for students to learn about their house, call to attention, and how to earn points for their house. Teachers came dressed up in their house colors to show their house spirit Every staff member and student is assigned to a house (just below).

Border Tribe (blue)

Priest Tribe (purple & gold)

Panther Tribe (black & gold)

"The day started with faculty energized and excited for the day to have their first house meeting. The positive energy was felt throughout the school day. As students dismissed from school from their house meeting, students came out chanting their cheer to represent their house. It was an amazing seeing students from every grade level leaving school on a positive and cheerful note"
~ Mrs. Rogers.

Note: Students and staff will earn points throughout the nine weeks to contribute to their house. At the end of each nine weeks, there will be a special assembly to celebrate the winning house.

Monday's Motivational Moment!

TRY, FAIL, and TRY AGAIN!

One of the most famous players in the history of baseball is the great Hank Aaron. Ask anyone which player stands out and his name will be mentioned very often. The interesting thing about the great Hank Aaron was this: he failed more times than he succeeded! "Hammerin Hank" hit 755 home runs, but struck out 1,383 times! No one remembers the strikeouts, only the home runs, only the successes! Consider how many great inventions and breakthroughs would have never taken place if failure ended the efforts?

Anyone who fears failure truly limits their opportunities. You see, failure and opportunity are not opposites. In reality, the two are similar and if you look at failure as a learning opportunity to grow and take a better path, you will automatically find more success. Like Hank Aaron, the best athletes grow throughout most of their sports careers based on what they learn from their failures.

The lesson for our Mustangs? The true measure of success is not in ending our failures and obstacles, but growing from them. The winners take the lessons from failure, analyze them, set a new course and sail where the winds of trial and error will take them.

"Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall."
~ Confucius, Chinese philosopher
