Service learning is one of the major focus areas of the Academy for Research, Clinical and Health Equity Scholarship (ARCHES), a rigorous six-week training program for college students interested in health professions, led by the School of Medicine's Office of Diversity & Inclusion.

This September, the National League for Nursing will formally recognize the School of Nursing & Health Studies as a Center of Excellence for "creating environments that enhance student learning and professional development."

Organized by the T32 Oversight Committee, Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted a poster day to showcase the work of its trainees, including master's students, postdoctoral fellows and others in advanced training.

About 30 children from the D.C. General Family Shelter participated in this year's HoyaMed Summer Sports Camp, a free, week-long sports camp led by School of Medicine students with visits from the Georgetown football team and D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

Nationwide, deaths from liver cancer have increased significantly over the last 16 years. Aiwu Ruth He, MD, PhD, a Georgetown liver cancer expert, said that part of the explanation is that people are living longer because of improved therapies for hepatitis B and C.

Ella T. Heitzler, PhD, WHNP, FNP, RNC-OB, assistant professor of advanced nursing practice at the School of Nursing & Health Studies, is the principal investigator of a new federal grant award from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to bolster the nation's nursing faculty workforce.

Patrick Malone, a student in the MD/PhD program (G'19, M'21), was one of 29 students from the United States selected to attend the 68th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, which hosted 39 Nobel laureates and 600 young scientists from 84 countries.
 




James Giordano, PhD, MPhil, professor in the departments of neurology and biochemistry and chair of the neuroethics studies program in the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics, has been selected by the IEEE Brain Initiative to chair the group tasked with developing an ethics considerations document for scientists and engineers working on neurotechnologies.

Barbara S. Bregman, PT, PhD, an emeritus faculty and cofounder of the department of neuroscience, has been appointed associate dean for health professions and education development. In this role, she will be responsible for implementing new health professions programs and for collaborating with the School of Nursing & Health Studies, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Medicine. The School of Medicine Class of 2022 will be welcomed into the medical profession at the White Coat Ceremony on Friday, August 3 in Gaston Hall. Tickets are required, but the ceremony will also be streamed live here.

Acute stress and trauma experienced by immigrant children who have been separated from their families at the U.S. border may have long-lasting impacts, a prospect described as "absolutely terrifying" by Matt Biel, MD, MSc, a Georgetown expert in child development, trauma and resilience.

 




A new report from the Center for Children & Families, part of the Health Policy Institute at Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy, shows just how important Medicaid is to children's health, especially in school districts that have a large share of their students covered through Medicaid.
