$21.1M Affordable Housing Project
for Veterans Going Up in N. Lawndale
|
|
Located in N. Lawndale on 2,000 acres in Alderman Jason Ervin's 28th Ward, the five-story Roosevelt Road Veterans Housing construction project will have 90 affordable apartments for disabled and homeless veterans. The apartments for men and women veterans will be at or below 60% of the Area's Median Income (AIM); 75 of the units will receive VA Support Housing vouchers from the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA).
In October 2019, the City Council Finance Committee approved a $21.1M package for the Roosevelt Road Veterans Housing construction in N. Lawndale.
Per a press release from Mayor Lightfoot, the City's support includes $5M in loans and cash grants, and the sale of seven city-owned vacant lots - valued at $875,000 and sold for $1 per lot. Additionally, grants were committed by the Home Depot Foundation, Commonwealth Edison, and the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA).
The apartment complex will be built by A Safe Haven Foundation, a Lawndale-based nonprofit that supports veterans struggling with homelessness and substance use disorders.

News from the Mayor's Office
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot recently introduced a plan to the Chicago City Council to raise the minimum wage from $13/hour to $15 by 2021 and, at the same time, eliminating many currently exempt workers, including the disabled. Input for the proposed change came from labor, business, elected officials, and other key stakeholders.

Also introduced to the Council were property tax incentives in support of industrial/commercial redevelopment projects on the City's South and Southwest Sides. One involving rehabilitation of a building in the Stock Yards Industrial Corridor, and another to acquire and rehab a block of eight buildings on 91st Street. Finally, a third to rehab a furniture factory for continued use and Landmark status for the Claremont Cottage District, and a building designed by noted architect Mies Van der Rohe.
