The Week In Review
State Agency Leader Discusses Resilience with Chamber Members
Dr. Julia Nesheiwat, Chief Resiliency Officer for the State of Florida, served as one of three presenters at the Tallahassee Speakers Series program on Tuesday, November 12. Nesheiwat was joined by Volusia County Environmental Management Director Ginger Adair as well as Jenifer Rupert from the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council. Preparing for disruption in business caused by natural disasters and the ability of those businesses to resume operation quickly and safely were key points of discussion. Additionally, the panel shared data with attendees on projected sea-level rise in Florida and its impact on coastal areas as well as the inland lakes and rivers.
Dr. Julia Nesheiwat's role will help drive collaboration on resiliency efforts at the local and regional levels to better leverage federal grants. In fact, just the creation of the state's Resiliency officer led to an improved bond rating.
The panelists fielded numerous questions from the audience which were asked by our emcee Jim Rose, a past chair of the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Department of Labor Final Rule: Overtime Update
The final rule updates the earnings thresholds necessary to exempt executive, administrative and professional employees from the Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA) minimum wage and overtime pay requirements, and allows employers to count a portion of certain bonuses/commissions towards meeting the salary level. The new thresholds account for growth in employee earnings since the thresholds were last updated in 2004.

In the final rule, the Department is:

  • raising the “standard salary level” from the currently enforced level of $455 per week to $684 per week (equivalent to $35,568 per year for a full-year worker);

  • raising the total annual compensation requirement for “highly compensated employees” from the currently enforced level of $100,000 per year to $107,432 per year;

  • allowing employers to use non-discretionary bonuses and incentive payments (including commissions) paid at least annually to satisfy up to 10% of the standard salary level, in recognition of evolving pay practices; and

  • revising the special salary levels for workers in U.S. territories and the motion picture industry.

The final rule is effective on January 1, 2020.

Final Business Smarts Program to Focus on Improving Customer Experience
In an era when you competition is not just local, but global, keeping your existing clientele becomes a critical piece of any business plan. Providing a top-notch experience for your customer is the right thing to do, and can ease the strain on your budget. It is estimated that new customer acquisition is 6-7 times more expensive than customer retention.

What systems are you using to manage your customer relationships? Is the return on investment where you need it to be? Is it helping or hurting your business?

Diana Fritz and JoAnne King, Coastal Cloud , will help you answer these questions and more at the next Business Smarts Education and Training Series program.

Centennial Celebration
A Century's Worth of History
As another racing season comes to a close, we look back at the early days of racing in the region. On February 22, 1959, Daytona Beach witnessed the Inaugural Daytona 500, the first race held at the brand new Daytona International Speedway. After 17 hours of racing—and three days of deliberations and newsreel reviews—Bill France declared Lee Petty the winner.
