Student Ambassadors Make a Great Impression and Have Fun in Destin (video)
We couldn't have done it without them! From unpacking, loading, handling children's activities and folding t-shirts, the MAFP student ambassadors worked hard to make sure over 400 MAFP Annual Meeting attendees had a great time this past July.
This year's Student Ambassadors were Jackson Browning (UMMC), Leah Burch (UMMC), Emily Bustin (UMMC), Justin Dyer (UMMC), and Zack Watson (UMMC). Along with the Ambassadors, medical students who serve on MAFP boards also attended, including Craig Bullock (UMMC), Will Casey (UMMC), Terry Moran (WCUCOM), and Caleb Zumbro (UMMC).
"The trip was a great opportunity to network and meet family physicians around the state," Justin Dyer said. He added that he enjoyed attending a casting and splinting workshop and getting interviewing tips from practicing physicians.
Student Ambassadors attended the Annual Meeting in Destin, Florida, with MAFP paying for their hotel room and meals. Hattiesburg Clinic also hosted a dinner one night for the group. During the meeting, they networked with practicing physicians and exhibitors and even had some free time to have fun together! Craig and Will spent some time on the golf course in friendly competition with physicians and exhibitors, while Leah, Emily and Justin tapped into their creative juices by taking an Adult Abstract Art class. Jackson and Caleb enjoyed a day on the water by hopping aboard the MAFP Charter Fishing Trip to reel in the catch of the day.

MAFP Foundation Awards 3 Students Scholarships to AAFP National Conference
MAFP Foundation awarded scholarships to three medical students who represented Mississippi at the AAFP's Family Medicine National Conference for Residents and Students in July. Leah Burch, Emily Bustin and Rachel Yi are each UMMC students interested in pursuing family medicine.
"I felt as though I was given a whole new perspective on family medicine," Yi said after returning from the trip. "I had no idea about the breadth and depth of family medicine which held so many different possibilities and opportunities."
The National Conference, attended by 2,500 medical students and residents each year, offers workshops and clinics, plus an exhibit hall featuring residency programs and potential employers. Held each year in Kansas City, Missouri, the next National Conference is August 2-4, 2018.
Bustin said she learned a lot from a workshop on residency interviews. "We used some of the example interview questions we were given to practice on each other. Overall, we all agreed that we felt much more prepared for residency interviews."
MAFP awarded each of the students a scholarship to cover their out-of-pocket expenses like registration, travel, hotel rooms and meals. Applicants for the scholarship must be first-time attendees, and preference is given to those in Year 2 or 3 of medical school.
Burch wholeheartedly recommended the experience to others. "The quality of information provided in the National Conference meetings and workshops was unparalleled," she said. "I cannot stress the importance of emphasizing the benefits of this experience to both students and residents alike. If I had any suggestions, it would be for Mississippi medical students and residents to become even more involved on a national level."

North Mississippi Family Medicine Residency Earns Recognition for QI Project
Tupelo's North Mississippi Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program recently completed a Quality Improvement project to increase immunization rates in senior adults. They were invited to the AAFP National Conference in July to present their project and receive a certificate. You can read their

UMMC FMIG Kicks Off New School Year
UMMC's Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) had the first meeting of the school year August 30 and welcomed MAFP's Workforce Director Kay-Lynn Meador to the meeting.
The group discussed event plans for the coming year, including:
Sept. 27 - UMMC FMIG Recruitment Fair at Student Union from 11 am - 1 pm. (For more information, contact Beth Wilson.)
Oct. 4 - Q&A with Dr. David Green of UMMC Family Medicine Residency Program
The group also has service projects planned for the year, including an event for trick-or-treaters in October, and participation in campus charity events.
