This Sunday we look at God as Lord, specifically the Lordship of Jesus Christ. There are really 3 Hebrew names for God that are similar but have different sovereign attributes: Elohim, Yahweh, and Adonai. My chief concern is that modern Christians have successfully divorced Jesus as Savior, from Jesus as Lord. Jesus as Savior is critically necessary for eternal life, while Jesus as Lord seems like an earthly option to most. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have said for years that people seem comfortable with Jesus as Savior, but Jesus as Lord is a bit meddlesome. There is an old saying that Jesus is either Lord of all, or He is not Lord at all. The truth is public living is always a reflection of our private values. I would argue that every aspect of life, and specifically our spiritual life, is a Lordship matter. How would our world be different if everyone did what was right in the eyes of the Lord? In other words, what would it look like if we could submit and surrender to Jesus and His way of life? I think this is one of those Sundays where we need the full weight of scripture to bear its weight on us. There is a great deal at stake in how we understand Jehovah Adonai.
