Painting Burgundy & Blue Demo Part Four, Continuing with Loose Color.

Welcome back to another BobBlast!

This is the fourth installment on making the painting titled "Burgundy and Blue."

In the previous three BobBlasts you saw how I begin, approach and develop a painting. In this step, I am continuing to  building up layers of paint, using less water for each layer, along with more pigmented color. I use professional paints because of the heavy pigment base. "Student-grade" paint has fillers. That's why the color is not as  vibrant and more paint is needed to get the desired effect.

First... to make the lights lighter, I make the darks darker.

Next... Start from the light source - in this painting, the light source is the window. Establish some shadow areas all over. I will usually use a cool color to work with the warm "sun" source.

I constantly build the contrast - the darks and lights - by re-evaluating and re-establishing and re-drawing while I am working on the painting! Eventually painting in the highlight, the focal point.

When it all comes together, I am happy with it and it matches the initial title -
then the painting is done.

Stay tuned for the painting finish, the varnish, painting the sides and the all-important signature!

Keep your brushes wet!
