News From the Shelter
Coming and going
 We have found new homes for 198 cats and dogs from the first of the year up to September 1. During the same time we returned 126 lost animals to their owners. As always, we cannot stress enough the importance of licenses and microchips for the speedy and safe return of your pets.  
 
We can not continue to be so successful without our fabulous staff, our dedicated volunteers, and our generous donors.

Join this short, leisurely race that supports the Jefferson County non-profit organizations of the Humane Society, Jumping Mouse Children's Center, the YMCA "Building Futures" Program, and the Sea Scouts. The race, from the PT Brewery to the Pourhouse, kicks off at noon, September 30. Parents, children and pets are invited to line up outside the PT Brewery at 11:30 prior to the start time. The race along the port ends 0.5k later at the Pourhouse.
The $25 suggested donation includes race entry, t-shirt, drink token, decal, mid-way snacks and entertainment. There is no charge for children and pets, and costumes are encouraged.
 
Can't make it to the event? Don't fret, you can buy a "Stay Home" ticket to support the causes. 
 
 

Thanks to  our community!

In May, Judy at the Hilltop Tavern had us as the non-profit of the month for the always fun Barstool Bingo. Many thanks to her and the Bingo crew and to all who came and played.

Even the cats got into bingo!

  

In July we were the non-profit for the monthly yoga benefit Feel Good Do Good at Madrona MindBody. Thanks especially to Shayann Hoffer and Vanessa Wade who taught the class.

 

Speaking of community: we are a part of the new Give Jefferson-Give Where You Live campaign.

            Paws up for our fosters!  
Another busy kitten season is winding down. We have dedicated fosters who do an awesome job with homeless kittens, some who come with moms and some who don't. Making sure that the babies are healthy and social before they can go to their forever homes is an act of love.


What a difference!
We have shiny new floors!
We received a grant from the Cross Charitable Foundation (same fine people who helped us build the small building) to get new epoxy coating for the floors. It was a disruptive two weeks but it looks great and is much more sanitary.

Indoor fun for all!
Cats who safely stay inside live much longer lives. There at lots of ways to enrich their environment. Places to climb, places to hide can be as easy as having a cardboard box to explore. Hunting for food is stimulating and this site full of food puzzle ideas is a great resource.
  
Most dogs love food puzzles- from a stuffed Kong, to sniffing out kibble hidden in the house, to games like the muffin tin game in this early video we made. Hide and seek can be a fun way to keep a good recall.
Of the many resources on the web we like  Patricia McConnell's site  a lot. We admire and share her booklet 'Love Has No Age Limit' with adopters.
Companion Animal Psychology not only has a great tag line but an inclusive list of pet people to follow. 
  
We found Chloe a new home after her human passed away.
Do you have a plan for your pets?
 We have had more than a few pets who came to us after their humans died lately.
Most of the pets were seniors and have found homes, a couple are still waiting.
We are  happy to care for every animal that comes to us. Please plan for your pets in your will, ask friends and family to find a guardian for your pets.

          Please join with other pet owners, animal lovers and civic-minded residents to preserve the integrity of our open admission shelter. You can help by becoming a Friend of the Shelter and making a recurring donation - monthly or quarterly - via Pay Pal or credit card. You can also arrange recurring donations through your bank account. We welcome all donations, but recurring donations are especially welcome, as they provide a continuing, reliable source of support.
