Dear St. Serra Parents,

It brings me great pleasure to let you know that we just had another terrific week at St. Serra! I was especially enlightened by our school Mass this past Monday as our third grade classes had the honor of participating in the Mass. The students were engaged, participated and followed along throughout the Mass. This was very encouraging as our Pastors have made a very conscious effort to be a part of our school community this year. Their presence on our campus reminds us that we are a Catholic community and that we will continue to develop our Catholic Identity in every aspect of our school on a daily basis.

I look forward, as well, to having our parents and grandparents being able to join us once again on campus for the celebration of Mass! When our children see us model good behavior they tend to follow our lead. It is important that our children attend Mass, at their parishes, on a regular basis as they are building the foundation that will be a part of their lives forever, and one that they will always be able to turn to as they venture through life.

Always Striving,

Tim Tolzda
Sr. Principal

St. Serra Students Perform Very Well on Latest STAR Tests
Schools and school districts across the country have noticed a decline in student performance that can be attributed to pandemic-related changes in instruction. To estimate the impact of those changes on student learning, Renaissance Learning examined the Fall 2019 and Fall 2020 STAR tests of more than 5 million students in grades 1-8 from all 50 states and Washington, DC. In a report titled How Kids are Performing: Tracking the Impact of Covid-19 on Reading and Mathematics Achievement, published in the fall of 2020, the company concluded that the pandemic has had a negative impact on both reading achievement and math achievement.

Updated COVID-19 Protocol & Student Symptom Decision Tree
The CDC and the Orange County Health Care Agency continually review and adjust their suggested practices and protocols based on emerging information about COVID-19. This memo is to announce some important changes regarding St. Serra’s COVID-19 protocols based on CDC and OCHCA guidance. Effective January 1, 2021, St. Serra has updated the return-to-school policy when a student
is exposed to COVID-19.
COVID-19 Health & Safety Reminders
Anytime that a face shield is worn, it must be with a face mask under the shield for all staff and students in all grades. It is important that we practice social distancing throughout our school and maintain good hygiene by washing hands on a consistent basis. Finally, if your child is feeling ill and displaying any COVID-19 related symptoms, please keep them home and contact your family medical professional regarding the situation. We appreciate your continued support which will help St. Serra stay open for in-person learning.
Traffic Update
We have noticed a significant backlog of cars in our parking lot during morning drop-off and especially afternoon pick-up.

The main reason that this occurs is that upon exiting the parking lot vehicles are waiting to cut across the three lanes of traffic on Antonio to get to the far left lane at Banderas to turn left or make a ‘U’ turn. This action is holding up traffic in our parking lot.

In order to keep traffic flowing, please exit the parking lot and stay in the right lane. We realize that this will force you to travel a block or two further but this action will keep traffic flowing more rapidly. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.
