Are you a student seeking hands-on experience to learn what it's really like to be a family physician? Our annual summer externship—jointly funded by Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan and AAFP Foundation's Family Medicine Philanthropic Consortium—might be just what you're looking for.

The selected student, working with a family physician mentor of his/her choice, plans the 4-6 week clinical and/or research externship so it is tailored to his/her interests. At the end of the externship, the student receives a $2,000 stipend and the mentor receives $500.

Competitive applications are due by April 1. Click here to read about the impact past externships have had on students choosing family medicine as their specialty.
Applications for volunteer leaders interested in serving on committees of MAFP, Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan, and the Family Medicine PAC are being accepted until Apr. 1. Committee members are vital to the success of our organizations, providing valuable guidance in the areas of advocacy, member engagement, practice management, resolution review, professional development, student and resident education, and the Family Medicine PAC. Appointments for the 2021-2022 service year begin in August.

The AAFP Foundation's Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute program is a year-long leadership development program for medical students and residents that begins immediately after National Conference. Selected scholars participate at National Conference, attend weekend workshops for leadership training, and learn how to create and execute an individual project relevant to their track of study.

This highly competitive program accepts 30 scholars who each receive a $550 award to help with the cost of virtually attending National Conference, as well as two days of intensive training. Applications are due by March 14.

The AAFP is now accepting applications for posters for National Conference. The conference provides one of the largest forums for residents and students to display their research and special projects. Applications are due by May 2.
Each year, AAFP recognizes a select number of outstanding family medicine residents with the AAFP Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education. In 2020, two of the 16 awardees were from Michigan! All 2021 application materials must be submitted to AAFP by June 8. Winners will be announced in the summer.
