The Masters of Arts in Civic Media at Columbia College Chicago is a year-long graduate program that connects students to the community and engages them in the design of collaborative solutions to existing regional problems. The main goal is to leverage the College's resources and the talents of our students to drive positive social change, and to build sustainable public-facing initiatives. We are committed over the long term to building a broad and deep portfolio of civic works that helps our area-wide municipal, cultural and civically-focused agencies move forward. Film Screening: True Justice
In December, the Kunhardt Film Foundation, a not-for-profit educational media company, will begin offering educators free access to the full length HBO documentary True Justice, a film about Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative's call to transform our nation's false narratives of racial difference and move towards a more equitable future. Accompanying resources include a 50 minute educator version of the film, classroom lessons for high school students, an engagement guide for community based organizations for adults, and a series of interviews collected during production. [ learn more ]

The Common Sense Census: Media Use by Tweens and Teens, 2019 is a big-picture look at how young people in the U.S. find entertainment and use devices. Beyond screen time, the report explores other critical challenges for families managing media use, from internet access for homework to unregulated, unrated online videos.
Grades 6-12 Game: Cast Your Vote
In the new and improved game Cast Your Vote , students learn how to evaluate ballot initiatives as well as candidates’ platforms, promises and qualifications based on their speeches, messaging and voting records. Once students are fully informed, they will make their decision and cast their vote in a local election. [ learn more ]
Losing the News: The Decimation of Local News and the Search for Solutions 
The new report by Pen America, Losing the News, ultimately calls for a rethinking of local journalism as a public good. The report concludes that reinvigorating local watchdog reporting will require concerted action and an investment of billions of dollars across the philanthropic, private, and public sectors. The report advocates for a new congressional commission to develop concrete recommendations for how the government can better support a free and independent local press. [ more info ]

PBS SRL Homegrown Fellowship
The  PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs  Homegrown Fellowship gives high school students in the Washington D.C. metro area an opportunity to make professional-quality videos while developing their journalism and video production skills and connecting with other students who are passionate about storytelling. This year, Fellows will create short video profiles of young voters whose stories exemplify their communities.

CFS: 2019 "What's Your Story?"
Trend Micro invites individuals ages 13 and older who are enrolled in school (K-12, college, university, film school), and school representatives to submit an entry for the 2019 "What's Your Story?" video competition. Entrants are asked to create a two minute video which answers the question, "If the internet disappeared, what would your life be like?" The grand prize is $10,000.

Growing Voters Commitment:
School and District Administrators in K-12
K-12 school and district administrators have the opportunity to sign the Growing Voters Commitment from the Teaching for Democracy Alliance. The Commitment includes providing teachers, staff, and students the leadership and support to facilitate and/or engage in important election- and voting-related learning opportunities such as voter registration, media literacy skill development, Action Civics, and more.
