FCC Seeking Comment on the Origination of Programming by FM Translators

Should broadcasters be able to originate programming on FM translators? Playing off the proposal to allow limited amounts of programming on FM boosters - basically the insertion of local ads, news, or emergency alerts - in the zonecasting proposal on which the FCC took comments earlier this year, a group of broadcasters has taken the proposal one step further, and asked if translators (including those FM translators rebroadcasting AM stations) should not have the same rights proposed for boosters. Comments on this proposal are due July 23.  Read More

No National EAS/WEA Test This Year
Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency response, FEMA will not conduct a national test of the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) this year. FEMA is moving the next national test of the system to 2021 out of consideration for the unusual circumstances and working conditions for those in the broadcast and cable industry. Read More
ABIP 11Reserve Your 2020 ABIP Inspection Now
The MAB's Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP) is a unique partnership between the MAB and the FCC under which stations that participate can receive a three-year exemption from routine FCC inspections.  Scheduling is still available for the 2020 Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP). The MAB will conducts these alternative inspections regionally through October.  Learn More

On June 25, Beasley Media Group's 105.9 Kiss FM (WDMK-FM/Detroit) on-air personalities Mason and Angie Star, along with 105.1 The Bounce (WMGC-FM) Morning Show Host Gello and The Detroit Praise Network's (93.5, 98.3, 99.9) Randi Myles hosted a zoom conference call with community leaders to discuss ways to bridge the gap between residents and the Police department to create "Solutions Not Slogans."   Read More

Former WATZ General Manager 'Uncle Don Rhea' Passes
The MAB has learned that former WATZ-AM/FM (Alpena) General Manager Don Rhea passed away June 20 at the age of 88.  Born Jack D. Rhea in 1931, he was known professionally as "Uncle Don Rhea."  Read More 

WJBK's Sherry Margolis Announces Retirement
After 35 years as an anchor at WJBK-TV (Detroit), Sherry Margolis has announced she is retiring.  The announcement was made Wednesday (6/24) during the station's 5 p.m. newscast.  Read More 

Longtime Lansing Broadcaster Mychal Grenawalt Retires 
After 40 years in the broadcasting industry, longtime Lansing-area broadcaster Mychal Grenawalt has announced his retirement.  He has spent the last seven years as a senior account executive with Nexstar Broadcasting's WLNS/WLAJ-TV.   Read More

Michigan Radio Debuts 'Kids These Days' Teen Podcast 
Michigan Radio has announced the debut of Kids These Days, a new podcast that offers an insider's perspective on what it's like to be a teenager today. This limited-run podcast is hosted by teens, and is a collaboration between Community High School in Ann Arbor and Michigan Radio's Peabody Award-winning podcast team.  Read More
