Our #MyMagisMessage for the week comes from Dynah Daly, a junior Integrated Marketing Communications major and Psychology minor from Western Springs, Il! Dynah has served with Thomas Jefferson International Newcomers Academy and St. Francis Math Tutoring for service-learning courses, both of which were for tutoring younger students K-12. As a student liaison, Dynah has served at the Fatima Family Center, the Cleveland Sight Center, and facilitated a virtual Lobo Lab during the Fall 2020 semester.
If you had to state your life mission off the top of your head, in one sentence, what would it be?
"To bring light and laughter to those I interact with every day"
#MyMagisMessage
My service story is a bit different than others... Prior to attending John Carroll, I went to a Dominican Catholic high school right outside the city of Chicago. Much like John Carroll, something they valued was service and as an immature teenager, the last thing I wanted to do was go spend my so-called “precious time” volunteering. As unfortunate as it is to hear, that is how I looked upon service from the ages of 14 to 18 years old.
Once I got to JCU, I was placed into service-learning courses for both Spring 2019 and Fall 2019 semesters. However, there was something unique about my service experience during that fall semester that really caused me to have my outlook on service do a complete 180 degree turn. I was placed at St. Francis doing the math tutoring program and the young girl I was tutoring looked at me and said “I love seeing you every week!” That night was when I submitted my application to become a liaison. I thought “maybe I can help others in an impactful way…”
As crazy as it sounds, one little girl changed my whole outlook on service. Everything was put into perspective for me: service is more than just helping out others. It is about building relationships and coming together with the community to create a greater good.
One community partner I served in particular was the Cleveland Sight Center during the first semester working as a liaison for CSSA. This is where those who are visually impaired receive different types of services such as tutoring for adults who are studying to receive their GED. I met a man who was almost fully blind. He told me his story about travelling the world as a DJ, and how he still creates mixes for radio stations all over the country. And now he is here working towards receiving his GED. It was truly inspiring and it made me regret the way I looked at what service was when I was younger.
Being able to look back and see the change of perspective I had from in the past few years truly motivates me to continue on with service for many years to come.
