Face-To-Face Coffee & Connections Returns!
With two important workshops afterward.
The Chamber is excited to be hosting its first, in-person Coffee & Connections after nearly a year! On Wednesday, March 10th, join us at St. Florian Event Center in Wintersville for a delicious breakfast followed by our popular and fun speed-networking session. We'll be able to safely distance, and of course, mask mandates will be in place. Bring business cards, flyers, menus, giveaway items, or brochures to distribute.
Afterward, we will be hosting our "New Member Orientation" at 9:30 for those new to the Chamber or anyone who would like a refresher on how to make the most of their membership. And from 10:30 to noon, learn all you need to know about the Chamber's new online selling platform at the "Shop Where I Live 101" workshop. Bring your laptop or tablet and we'll help you get registered, set up, and answer any questions you may have. If you're already on Shop Where I Live, it's a great chance to get up to speed on adding more products or any other areas that you may have questions about. There's no charge for the workshop, which will run from 10:30 to noon and no RSVP is necessary for the either of the post-Coffee & Connections events.

Creating An Employee Social Media Policy
Live Mini Webchat
Tuesday, March 16, 2021 - 12 p.m.-12:30 p.m.
Presenter: Joanna Forbes, SHRM-CP, HR Advisor, SBDC
Do you have a social media policy outlining what your employees may and may not say on their personal social media pages? Are you aware of what is permitted to be in that policy? The National Labor Relations Act protects the rights of employees to act together to address conditions at work, with or without a union. This protection extends to certain work-related conversations conducted on social media, such as Facebook and Twitter.
Learn how you can protect your business and provide clear guidance on this issue at the next Ohio Small Business Development Center online workshop.

The Chamber Exchange: Members Helping Members
It's all about give and take and this past year has driven that point home more than ever. The Chamber's latest member-to-member program is called, "The Chamber Exchange" and allows businesses and organizations to post "Gives" - items that they no longer need that may be of use to another member, and "Takes" - items that you may be in need of.
A few rules to keep in mind: Please email or phone the business or organization that has posted a "give" that you can use. Don't "pop in" for more information. Be brief if you have questions. Arrange for pick up at a convenient time for the donor. Items are to be used for your business or organization's offices only. Do not post or accept items for personal use. And keep in mind that this is to be an easy, no-hassle program for all involved. Be respectful of fellow member's time.

Ohio Chamber Voices Continued Support for Ohio Fairness Act
On Wednesday, the Ohio Senate Government Oversight and Reform Committee passed Senate Bill 9 by a vote of 4-2.
Earlier this month, the Ohio Chamber put forth proponent testimony regarding Senate Bill 9; a measure that would reduce regulatory restrictions for administrative agencies by 30% by the year 2025.
Additionally, the bill would stipulate that if the agency cannot meet this reduction schedule, they must comply with the “2-for-1” requirement for any new regulatory restriction.
This bill has appeared in the previous two general assemblies – SB 293 in the 132nd general assembly and SB 1 in the 133rd general assembly – each time receiving support from the Ohio Chamber as well as other business trade associations.

U.S. Chamber Takes New Actions to Support and Empower Employers to Help Accelerate Vaccinations, Protect Workers, and Stop the Spread of Coronavirus
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce today launched the Rally for Recovery Commitment (www.committorecovery.com), supporting and empowering businesses and business organizations nationwide to take basic but important steps to accelerate vaccinations, protect workers, stop the spread of coronavirus, and defeat the pandemic. The Rally for Recovery Commitment is the latest step in the Chamber’s ongoing and expansive efforts to ensure business leaders have the tools and resources they need to inform and protect their employees, communicate to their customers, support their communities, and get our country back to health.
The Rally for Recovery Commitment encourages every company and organization to continue to do their part to help protect our employees, customers and communities, so that together we can reignite the economy and defeat the pandemic. The commitment includes examples of steps employers can take from continuing to encourage masking, providing vaccination information to employees, paid time-off for employees to get vaccinated, and communicating the importance of vaccines in the local community. As part of the effort, the Chamber is expanding its efforts to develop and distribute guides and resources to help employers achieve these goals.

Today in History
- March 5, 1963 -
Hula Hoop patented
From History: The Hula Hoop, a hip-swiveling toy that became a huge fad across America when it was first marketed by Wham-O in 1958, is patented by the company’s co-founder, Arthur “Spud” Melin. An estimated 25 million Hula Hoops were sold in its first four months of production alone.
In 1948, friends Arthur Melin and Richard Knerr founded a company in California to sell a slingshot they created to shoot meat up to falcons they used for hunting. The company’s name, Wham-O, came from the sound the slingshots supposedly made. Wham-O eventually branched out from slingshots, selling boomerangs and other sporting goods. Its first hit toy, a flying plastic disc known as the Frisbee, debuted in 1957. The Frisbee was originally marketed under a different name, the Pluto Platter, in an effort to capitalize on America’s fascination with UFOs.
Melina and Knerr were inspired to develop the Hula Hoop after they saw a wooden hoop that Australian children twirled around their waists during gym class. Wham-O began producing a plastic version of the hoop, dubbed “Hula” after the hip-gyrating Hawaiian dance of the same name, and demonstrating it on Southern California playgrounds. Hula Hoop mania took off from there.
The enormous popularity of the Hula Hoop was short-lived and within a matter of months, the masses were on to the next big thing. However, the Hula Hoop never faded away completely and still has its fans today. According to Ripley’s Believe It or Not, in April 2004, a performer at the Big Apple Circus in Boston simultaneously spun 100 hoops around her body. Earlier that same year, in January, according to the Guinness World Records, two people in Tokyo, Japan, managed to spin the world’s largest hoop–at 13 feet, 4 inches–around their waists at least three times each.
Following the Hula Hoop, Wham-O continued to produce a steady stream of wacky and beloved novelty items, including the Superball, Water Wiggle, Silly String, Slip ‘n’ Slide and the Hacky Sack.

Today is
National Cheese Doodles Day.
Did You Know?
- Cheetos cheese-flavored puffs became a hit in the 1950s. Soon after, Cheez Doodles appeared.
- “Cheez Doodles fingers” is the official term used when you get cheese powder on your fingers after eating any cheese-flavored snack food.
- Cheez Doodles are said to be one of the only packaged snack foods preferred by Julia Child.
- They have recently entered pop culture as the preferred snack of ESPN NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith. They are also the favorite snack of Lincoln Peirce’s comic character Big Nate.
-
Wise (the company that produces Cheez Doodles) recently made their Crunchy Cheez Doodles “cheezier,” more akin to Cheetos’ flavor.
